Your views on open access publishing are needed!
The SOAP Project (*) is currently conducting an online survey to assess
researchers experiences with open access publishing. This survey
aims to inform the most comprehensive analysis of attitudes to open access
publishing to date and is seeking views from a wide a range of interested
parties. It is primarily aimed at active researchers in public and private
organizations, from all fields of the research in the sciences and
humanities and focuses on publication of research articles in (open
access) peer-reviewed journals.
If you would like to contribute to shaping the public discourse on open
access, please visit http://surveymonkey.com/soap_survey_g
It should take 10-15 minutes to complete. Please share this news with your
research collaborators, so that the views from your community will be
properly represented.
The survey outcome will be made public and openly shared with the
publishers, research funding agencies and European Commission, libraries
and researchers.
Thanks in advance, the SOAP Project Team
(*) Note: The SOAP consortium is funded by the European Commission and
coordinated by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. It
represents key stakeholders in open access, such as publishers BioMed
Central, SAGE and Springer; funding agencies (the UK Science and
Technology Facilities Council) and libraries (the Max Planck Digital
Library of the Max Planck Society). The project runs for two years, from
March 2009 to February 2011.

The lower fee for registration expires on June 30 for the IFLA Satellite
meeting “New Techniques for Old Documents- Scientific examination methods
in the service of preservation and book history” Uppsala, Sweden, August
16-18.
This conference covers many aspects of analyzing library collections,
ranging from DNA-analysis to current and future prospects of OCR-reading of
texts. Librarians, book historians and conservators should take this
opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the information that can be drawn
out of documents ranging from archaeological findings and war-damaged
manuscripts to more ordinary library collections.
The general theme is divided into these five sessions:
* DNA-analysis
* Research in paper conservation
* Pigment analysis
* Dating of documents
* Reading texts -decipherment and image analysis

6/17/10, Top Trends in Academic Libraries. ACRL's Research Planning and
Review committee developed a list of the top ten trends that are
affecting academic libraries now and in the near future. This list was
compiled based on an extensive review of current literature.
The trends are listed in alphabetical order.
- Academic library collection growth is driven by patron demand
and will include new resource types.
- Budget challenges will continue and libraries will evolve as a
result.
- Changes in higher education will require that librarians
possess diverse skill sets.
- Demands for accountability and assessment will increase.
- Digitization of unique library collections will increase and
require a larger share of resources.
- Explosive growth of mobile devices and applications will drive
new services.
- Increased collaboration will expand the role of the library
within the institution and beyond.
- Libraries will continue to lead efforts to develop scholarly
communication and intellectual property services.
- Technology will continue to change services and required
skills.
- The definition of the library will change as physical space is
repurposed and virtual space expands.
A virtual session will be held on July 7 as a part of the ALA Annual
Virtual Conference to allow for a more in-depth discussion of this
report.

After a 6 month hiatus I am back to book sleuthing <g>
There are only a few copies of the titles below in WorldCat
probably because they were not distributed through the book trade
Since the government is planning to completely re-vamp local
administration in Greece under the “KALLIKRATIS” programme
the Gazetteer volumes will be a VERY useful for establishing the
place names and jurisdictions as they were before 2010

Harvard Studies in Classical Philology. Volume 1-102. 1890-2004.
Greenough, James B. (founding editor) "Edited by a Committee of the
Classical Instructors of Harvard University".
Boston. Ginn & Company - Harvard University. 1890-2004. Hardcover.
Good. 102 volume continuous run of this annual serial. Bound in 102
hardcover books. Ex-library copies except for the most recent 3
numbers. 8 early books are in the original paper covered boards
bindings, the balance in cloth. About half are reprints by Johnson, the
post-1960 issues tend to be in publisher's cloth instead of
maroon-color buckram cloth rebindings. No library stamps or other
markings noted in the text areas. The books are in sound bindings, the
8 century-old original bindings have some wear at spine extremities,
one with its back redone in colored tape. Still a good working set,
scarce in a run. An important series on the writings, language, and
sometimes the material culture of the ancients. Most articles written
in English, but in Latin once in a while.
