The Greek theses on the Internet
Doctoral dissertations Greek scientists a valuable record and a significant
source of knowledge, are concentrated in a revamped website (
http://www.didaktorika.gr), with new search capabilities, navigation and
access to the full content. This is the electronic "roof" of the National
Archive of PhD Theses (EADD), whose responsibility is setting up and
maintaining the National Documentation Centre (EKT).
In EADD repository includes more than 29,000 bibliographic records of
theses systematically documented (with elements such as title, abstract,
author, academic field, educational institution, council members, year of
doctorate award, keywords, country, language). Users can find the material
that interests them, using multiple filters, and easy to navigate in
different fields: scientific discipline, institution, author, country,
language, date.
More than 20,500 dissertations provide access to the full text of the
thesis - the EADD currently contains 4,500,000 digitized pages, a number
that is constantly growing. Besides the possibility of browsing and
printing per page, users can now save their thesis in PDF document pdf,
after registering the repository and acceptance of terms of use (for
personal, non-commercial use or for educational / research purposes ).
Registered users can also be ordered online a thesis in print form or on CD
/ DVD, or express their interest in digitization / post the full text of a
thesis that is not available online. Also new in the online environment
work Electronic Support Center User EADD (http://helpdesk.didaktorika.gr),
which allows for electronic filing and answering requests and access to
FAQs and useful files.
The National Archive of PhD Theses (EADD), a service of the National
Documentation Centre (EKT) brings together the theses elaborated in Greek
universities Greek and foreign students, and universities abroad by Greek
students (recognized by DOATAP).
The ECB, by law, is since 1985 the organization responsible for maintaining
the National Archive of Dissertations. The majority of theses included in
EADD has developed from 1985 onwards, while a small percentage of theses
(about 6%) for the period 1932 -1985. The form file more than 30,000
doctoral theses held in the Library of Science and Technology of the ECB at
the National Research Foundation.
The EADD is an important stock of scientific knowledge and the ESF utilizes
all the capabilities of the new Information and Communication Technologies
for the free disposal of the scientific community and society.
Specifically, the ECB has moved the National Register of Dissertations,
along with mass digitization of older dissertations, electronic repository
infrastructure, with increased functionality and services.
This ensures that search, retrieval and long term preservation of theses
and interoperability with international repositories. At the same time,
increasing the ease of identifying theses by integrating their EADD makes
them searchable by search engines (eg Google). In addition, every
registered thesis in the repository EADD acquire a permanent address (URL),
while ensuring the long term preservation of digital objects and the
timeless presentation and promotion of the project.
The ECB participates actively in international network of DART-Europe, a
collaboration between research libraries and library consortia across
Europe, with a view to improving access to European doctoral dissertations.
Thus, the Greek has a PhD in European portal DART (www.dart-europe.eu),
which provides open access to over 400,000 theses from 27 European
countries through a single search interface and navigation.
Strengthening the researcher: Benefits of placing a thesis at EADD
Open access to scientific knowledge is a central pillar of the European
Digital Agenda for 2020, the dominant trend in the international scientific
community and a key term growth in line with national and European policies
on scientific and cultural knowledge and production.
The ECB, fulfilling its institutional role, creates the infrastructure for
the collection, documentation and disposal eminent scientific and cultural
content in Greek and international scientific community. A key point of
this action is the ECB and the National Archives of Dissertations (EADD).
The basic principles that shape the political mood of the content of EADD
is: to protect and enhance open access to research and knowledge
production, and support young researchers in their quest to make their work
known and accessible to Greek and international scientific community but
also the general public.
The open availability of doctoral theses from the central, authoritative,
reliable Web service EADD has undeniable benefits to their own students,
the research community and the general public. The EADD is the gateway to
display the results of original scientific research, but also the use and
re-use. So, for the researcher who submits the thesis, the point is
timeless EADD visibility and dissemination of labor, increasing the
potential references and international recognition.
Taking even mind that every doctoral dissertation is one of the first texts
in which a researcher is known in the academic community, perceived the
great importance of proper disposal, disposal and documentation of the
thesis for further development of the new investigator . Moreover, these
procedures ensure transparency in the conduct of research while
contributing to the prevention of plagiarism. On the website of EADD you
can find detailed information for both the deposit and procedures for the
multiple benefits arising from the process of filing theses.
The updated version of the National Archives Depository Dissertations
developed within the project "National Information System for Research and
Technology (EPSET)-Social Networks and Content Generated by Users"
(Operational Programme "Digital Convergence" NSRF Co-financing of Greece
and the EU European Regional Development Fund) (www.epset.gr), which is the
main developmental task of the ECB.

National Documentation Centre: access to knowledge
The National Documentation Centre (www.ekt.gr) is a national scientific
user facility at the National Research Foundation. As infrastructure
nationwide, the ECB's institutional role in the collection, organization
and dissemination of scientific and technological information within and
outside the country. It also provides information on research and
innovation, and supports participation in national and European programs
and use of research results.
With a continuous presence in the Greek scientific community since 1980,
the ECB uses the Information and Communication Technologies, combined with
modern business methods to develop innovative measures geared to enhance
open access to digital content, science and culture. To this end, it
collaborates with important producers of prestigious content, such as
libraries, archives, museums, research centers.
More than 5,300,000 digital pages of electronic repositories, journals and
digital libraries are already available from the website of the National
Information System for Research and Technology (www.epset.gr), which is the
main developmental task of the ECB.
