2018-2019 Hellenic studies Library Research Fellowship Program announcement

Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection Library Research Fellowship Program, 2018-2019 Thanks to generous ongoing funding from the Elios Charitable Foundation and additional funding from the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Foundation, the University Library at California State University, Sacramento is pleased to announce the continuation of the Library Research Fellowship Program to support the use of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection by fellows for scholarly research in Hellenic studies while in residence in Sacramento, CA. The Program provides a limited number of fellowships ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 to help offset transportation and living expenses incurred during the tenure of the awards and is open to external researchers anywhere in the world at the doctoral through senior scholar levels (including independent scholars) working in fields encompassed by the Collection’s strengths who reside outside a 75-mile radius of Sacramento. The term of fellowships can vary between two weeks and three months, depending on the nature of the research, and for the current cycle will be tenable from July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019. The fellowship application deadline is February 28, 2018. No late applications will be considered. Consisting of the holdings of the former Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism, the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection is the premier Hellenic collection in the western United States and one of the largest of its kind in the country, currently numbering approximately 75,000 volumes. It comprises a large circulating book collection, journal holdings, electronic resources, non-print media materials, rare books, archival materials, art and artifacts. With its focus on the Hellenic world, the Collection contains early through contemporary materials across the social sciences and humanities relating to Greece, the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, and the surrounding region, with particular strengths in Byzantine, post-Byzantine, and Modern Greek studies, including the Greek diaspora. There is a broad representation of over 20 languages in the Collection, with a rich assortment of primary source materials. Since 2009 the collection has experienced particularly dramatic growth through several major gift acquisitions. Acquisition of the Prof. John P. Anton collection

Dear Friends and Colleagues, I am happy to announce that the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection in the University Library at California State University, Sacramento has acquired approximately 1,100 select volumes in the areas of ancient philosophy and Modern Greek literature and the entire archive (ca. 60 linear feet) from the collection of the late Prof. John P. Anton. This collection was generously donated by Anton’s widow, Helen J. Anton. Anton taught at several institutions before becoming Distinguished Professor of Greek Philosophy and Culture at the University of South Florida from 1982 until his retirement. He authored 10 books, edited 18 others, and published over 125 articles in various journals. He was awarded four honorary doctorates and served on many professional organizations in the humanities throughout his career. He passed away on Dec. 20, 2014. Through readings, individual exercises, and class discussions, students will develop an understanding of the following key components of digitization project planning: evaluation and preparation of resources, building sustainable workflows and storage environments, and usability assessment. In the first part of the course, students will become familiar with current research into the behaviours and attitudes of image-seekers, and they will *develop a broad understanding of how different metadata standards for libraries, archives and museums record and present information to the end user.* In the following weeks, we will discuss basic steps for creating and preserving digital images, such as choosing an appropriate scanning resolution, file naming, and devising scale-appropriate storage methods. Students will evaluate various strategy and planning documents in order to develop goals for their projects, and will be given examples of workflows that can be customized for their own use. The focus will be on providing access to collections that are being digitized from analogue materials, but will also have applications to born-digital collections. Course goals: - Increase understanding of current environment for digital images - Experience digital collections from the user perspective, evaluating their goals and needs - Learn planning techniques and strategies for implementing a digitization program - Evaluate various approaches and standards to metadata, understand metadata interoperability - Learn the standard sizes, formats and techniques for scanning images This course is followed by Beth Knazook's Describing Photographs for the Online Catalogue, for those who are interested. Beth Knazook is a PhD Candidate and Teaching Fellow in the Art History and Art Conservation program at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada. She holds an MA in Photographic Preservation and Collections Management from Ryerson University and the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, and has worked as the Curatorial Specialist for Ryerson University Archives & Special Collections and as the Photo Archivist for the Stratford Festival of Canada. She has presented at conferences on topics of digital access and cataloguing methods for image-based resources. Dear colleagues, I am trying to ascertain which American libraries have paper subscriptions to the Athens newspaper Καθημερινή and who your suppliers are. I would also be interested in knowing whether anybody purchases commercially-available microfilm of this newspaper and again who the vendor is.
