Greek Publishing & Bookselling during the crisis

On my recent book-buying visit to Athens I was keenly aware of some of the effects of the crisis on the book business in Greece, and this article I posted last week also pointed out the current difficulties and the severe consequences of the economic situation http://publishingperspectives.com/2015/08/greek-publishings-summer-of-disco… For another view - from the fighting trenches, so to speak - I just discovered online the interesting blog of the "Syllogos Ypallelon Bibliou Chartou Attikis" https://bookworker.wordpress.com A very active labour organization, it organizes frequent demonstrations against whatever it perceives as damaging to "book" workers. An ever cascading sequence of events where the problems seem to overwhelm any potential solutions, and we seem to be watching the disintegration not just of an economy but also of a culture. BTW : Is anyone out there collecting electronic resources like this for future archival preservation ? I ask because one acquaintance of mine is a member of a regional community organization, currently in disarray because no one can afford even their very modest membership fees. Consequently, although they still have an "office" ( I think the landlord is forgoing the full rent - the premises would be left vacant with little chance of finding a new tenant anyway) they cannot afford to pay the electricity bill - so the office can only be used on bright sunny days. I think that a lot of similar agencies are facing similar difficulties and the distinct possibility that their records and archives may disappear as the organization dies. I guess the financial crisis in Greece (and the US bubble-bursts), the decline of US institutions' funding for conference and acquisitions-related travel, and the retirement of several bibliographers/specialists for Modern Greece in the US all contributed to the loss of the momentum we had earlier seemed to be developing. LC is still continuing to collect Modern Greek materials, with a fairly comprehensive approval plan for monographs and actually some new serial money for additional 2016 subscriptions. For those who are able to go to the October MGSA Symposium, it would be great to get a report on any library, archival, or bibliographic-related papers or discussions. Greek Publishing’s Summer of Discontent

See below for a short article about the really dire state of publishing and bookselling in Greece at this stage of the crisis. A month ago I was in Athens to buy books and experienced some of the problems at first hand. Not least of my difficulties was an early ( but unsuccessful) attempt to SEND some money to a bank in Greece to make my expected purchases, so instead I arranged to have my daily credit card limit extended to a more useful amount than the usual tourist allowance. Despite the bank closures I tried as best I could to pay in cash whenever I was able to extract enough Euro notes from the bank machines. The rest were perforce charged to my credit cards, even though I was unsure as to how - or how quickly - any such payments would be translated into actual cash by the recipients in order to pay their current obligations. Many people are still "working" ... but at jobs with long arrears of pay that they hope their employers will be able to fulfil sometime in the future. If you want to help then NOW is the time to BUY SOME BOOKS FROM GREECE so as to ensure that at least 'some" of the publishers and bookshops survive! By Evangelia Avloniti EVANGELIA AVLONITI If anything, the past six months in Greece have been the opposite of boring to outside observers. Ever since left-wing party Syriza rose to power in January 2015, the country’s clash with the EU has read like a dramatic script that delves into dystopia, a tragic tale in which Greece is portrayed either as the hapless victim or the prime culprit, depending which side you are on. Only the situation has never read like a script to those of us living in Greece; it has always felt like reality or, to go back to the film analogy, like a succession of dangerous stunts in a film without direction. When the government imposed capital controls and a bank holiday on June 28 in order to restrict the movement of capital following the call for a referendum, even Syriza’s firm supporters felt their world falling to pieces. A daily cash withdrawal limit of 60 euros was imposed, and individuals and businesses were banned from making online transfers abroad. Even though individuals can now withdraw their allocated 420 euro per week in one go, online transfers abroad are still not allowed with individuals and businesses having to apply to their bank’s special committees to assess their applications. To say that the impact of the capital controls and extended bank holiday has been disastrous for the economy would be an understatement. From June 28 until today, the turnover for three out of ten Greek businesses has dropped by 70% and overall consumption by 50%, according to The Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen & Merchants. The impact on Greek publishing has been just as dramatic. According to Greek literary magazine, *O Anagnostis*, the turnover for Greek bookshops has fallen by 50–80%. Publishers report that their turnover slipped by 80% and their production by almost 90% in the month of July. In *Vima* newspaper, Yiannis Konstantopoulos, president of the Board of Directors for the Association of Greek Publishers and Booksellers (ENELVI) and CEO for Minoas Publishing, revealed that book printing came to a complete stop in July. Paper and ink cartridges are imported, and domestic suppliers demand up-front cash payments, “all orders for printing paper were canceled … Many publishers have sent their employees on forced holidays … I fear that those publishers, who will not go into insolvency now, will do that in due course.” [image: is also protesting a government proposal to increase VAT on books, which is also likely to cut sales even further.] ENELVI IS ALSO PROTESTING A GOVERNMENT PROPOSAL TO INCREASE VAT ON BOOKS, WHICH IS ALSO LIKELY TO CUT SALES EVEN FURTHER. On July 12, ENELVI issued a statement to all relevant ministries in Greece asking them “to take some basic … measures to ensure that importing printing paper is made easier for Greek publishers (as stock levels are very low) … and that the ban on transferring money abroad is lifted so that publishers can honor their financial obligations.” Giota Kritseli, publisher at Kichli <https://www.facebook.com/kichlipublishing>, said: “If you take into account the 80% fall in our turnover in July and the fact that our earnings have been in steady decline since January, the situation can only be described as dramatic. In essence, having generated no revenue from the end of June, we have only been incurring debts. Apart from our running expenses we’ve also had to deal with an accumulation of mainly bad checks (due to the capital controls) and the payment of our tax bills for next year. It is no wonder many businesses have been unable to make ends meet in these conditions.” Chrysa Georgakopoulou, publisher of highly-respected Scripta Publications, which closed down in the midst of the capital control chaos, was quick to point out that it was not only the recent capital controls and extended bank holiday that brought Scripta’s demise. The company had been facing financial difficulties for the last three years. “Books were never a first priority for Greeks,” she wrote in a moving farewell letter to colleagues, associates and friends. “It was always the very few that sustained Greek publishing in its semi-comatose state.” Soti Triantafillou, one of Greece’s most beloved authors and editor at Patakis <http://www.patakis.gr/> echoed Georgakopoulou’s words arguing that the market needs “stability, a business-friendly social framework, sobriety and some sort of collective peace of mind (to survive). The Greek readership does not have any of these. It’s a turbulent time for us all.” It remains unclear when the vicious circle of supply chain problems will be broken and the ban on online transfers abroad will be lifted. Until then, Greek publishers will have to rely on their own devices and their foreign clients’ understanding, patience and goodwill. Luckily, there has been plenty of that throughout this difficult time. Amy Spangler of the Anatolialit Agency in Turkey, who has been working closely with Greek publishers for many years now, said in heartfelt statement: “Our hearts and minds are with the people of Greece, including of course our publishing colleagues there, as they undergo this trying period. Working in a country that often experiences serious currency fluctuations, and the repercussions thereof, we can empathize to a point, although the situation in Greece is on an entirely different level of course. While it might be a bit nerve-wracking not knowing when we’re going to get paid by Greek publishers, there is really nothing we can do but be patient, and we have resigned ourselves to that. Thankfully we work with a sub-agent who keeps us updated, and whom we know we can depend upon to do everything possible to secure payments. But right now, it befalls us to express our solidarity with our colleagues by being patient. Books fill the mind but not the belly, frankly, and so I can understand, given the current the situation, if a rights payment is not a publisher’s priority. Ligatus Language of Binding On-line Thesaurus

The aim of the thesaurus is to present a consistent vocabulary for the use of all those who work with early bindings, built wherever possible on existing resources, but adapted for use in an on-line hierarchical environment that will allow terms that are not known to a user to be found. It is constructed around concepts (such as different bookbinding components, features, materials or techniques) that can be expressed by a number of language terms (labels). The thesaurus allows one concept to have more than one label, which allows the same concept to be searched for by the different terms that may have been used historically to describe it. It will also allow the concepts to be expressed in different languages. The Language of Binding thesaurus can be used as a reference online resource that can be searched by keyword or alphabetically. The concepts contained in the thesaurus are, however, also arranged hierarchically, based on a class/sub-class relationship, which allows concepts to be retrieved by navigating down the hierarchies even if their label (the term) is not known. It is hoped that the thesaurus will enable all those who work with books in early bindings to arrive at more consistent descriptions of those bindings. By being based primarily on single concepts, it has tried to avoid the more familiar but sometimes frustratingly imprecise language that has often been used in the past. This means that some of these familiar terms will not be found as labels, though they may be referred to in the scope notes that define and describe the concepts (and can therefore be found by a simple keyword search). At the moment, the thesaurus contains labels primarily in English, but work on its translation has already started, and plans for the addition of illustrations are also underway. The thesaurus can, in addition, be used as a look-up service for software applications that need to populate schema fields from thesauri. An accompanying volume, Coming to Terms: guidelines for the description of historical bindings, which is based on the terms in the thesaurus, is to be published in the autumn. The success of the thesaurus will to a large extent depend on contributions made to it by its users, either to add more concepts, refine existing scope notes or correct mistakes. Such contributions to the thesaurus will be welcomed, and can be made online following a registration process.
