A piece of WWII ephemera
Yank : The Army Weekly Vol.3 No.22 Nov.17 1944 (Alaska Edition)
Includes an illustrated article (pp. 4-6) "The Liberation of Athens"
by Sgt. Joe McCarthy, Yank Staff Correspondent.
But not "THAT" Joe McCarthy ... as far as I can tell <g>
given the reporter 's comments on ELAS/KEE ...
"The Greeks are great ones for chanting slogans while they march.
There was a big representation of the Kappa Kappa Epsilon, the
Greek Communist group, weaving along the street in a procession
like a snake dance and roaring in perfect harmony like a college
fraternity " Kap-pa Kap-pa Ep-see-lon." It sounded like the campus
at Ann Arbor, Mich. the night before the Minnesota game"
Also details about the effect of war-time inflation on the
value of the drachma:
"As I write the drachma is worth almost 100 billion to the dollar
and its value is still dropping. One cigarette costs 80 billion
drachmas, one egg costs 8 million drachmas..."
Interesting to read what the servicemen in the US Army were
being told about the situation in Greece at the time.

Please let me know if you feel such postings as this breach list protocol
since they are somewhat "commercial" offerings.
However I think it will be mutually beneficial if I am able to give list
members first dibs at old, odd, scarce or ephemeral items like these,
before posting them on my web site or on ABE/Alibris/ZVAB etc.
It is in the nature of your libraries that you will already have on shelf
"all the usual suspects" (so to speak) and also probable that you all scan
the inetrenet book listings and e-bay etc, so I will only post such items
that may not otherwise be easily available on the web. Feel free
to send any "wants" for any similar items you may need so if they
DO show up in m y searches I can let you know that they are available, or which
may

Dear CoHSL members,
The Modern Greek Studies Association Symposium is scheduled for October
18-20, 2007 and will take place at Yale University
http://www.yale.edu/macmillan/hsp/MGSA20.html. The MGSA Library
Committee--which includes all CoHSL members who are MGSA members--will
meet on Friday morning, from 9:00-12:00 in classroom 38 of the Beinecke
Library. The focus of the meeting will be the Modern Greek Resources
Project.
I am also pleased to announce that Maria Georgopoulou has organized a
panel which is scheduled to take place at lunch time on Friday (after
our committee meeting) October 19th. The goal of the panel is to provide
Modern Greek Studies faculty and students information on the progress
that Greek libraries, archives and research institutions have made in
the digital realm. Hopefully this panel will initiate a productive
discussion from the practitioners' side, which can help us to further
identify their resource needs as the Project moves forward.
I hope that you are planning to join us in October. We are meeting early
on in the conference, which means we can get the work done first, and
then enjoy the rest of the presentations. I will pass the torch to
George Paganelis, who will take over as MGSA Library Committee Chair for
the next two years. Thanks, George for volunteering to take over!
Warm regards to all,
Rhea

Dear all,
Please note that even if you are not a member of MGSA, you are still
welcome to attend our meeting. Simply register for the conference as a
non-member. If ever you only want to attend the meeting and panel, you
can register for Friday only, which, according to the registration web
site, is $40.00.
Finally, I neglected to thank Tony Oddo for arranging for our meeting
space and time at the Beinecke. Thank you, Tony!
Best,
Rhea
