*Constantine (Deno) and Marie Macricostas and the Macricostas Family
Foundation Name West Wing in Honor of General Ioannis Makriyannis*
Maria Georgopoulou, Director of the Gennadius Library has announced that
Constantine (Deno) and Marie Macricostas, through the Macricostas Family
Foundation, have pledged a $1.5 million gift in support of the Library’s
new west wing. In acknowledgment of this significant gift, the space will
be named the “Ioannis Makriyannis Wing” at the wishes of Mr. and Mrs.
Macricostas, in honor of the Greek patriot General Makriyannis (1797–1864).
Makriyannis was born in a village immediately adjacent to the birthplace of
Mr. Macricostas’ mother, in the region of Phokis. He commissioned a set of
paintings illustrating the Greek War of Independence that now reside in the
Gennadius Library. “We are thrilled to recognize Deno and Marie’s
passionate support in this way,” reports Georgopoulou. “This beautiful new
wing will allow the history and culture of modern Greece to be revealed and
displayed as never before, thanks to their generosity and involvement.”

*Our Annual Spring Gala is Coming to NYC May 10! Learn More About Our Two
Honorees*
*"I like to think of him as a sort of gadfly, or perhaps a conscience, for
our field never ... swayed by orthodox opinion or academic fashions....One
always learns from him, since he commands such a masterly overview."*
— Professor John Cherry on Malcolm Wiener
*Malcolm Hewitt Wiener*, Aegean prehistorian and Chairman *Emeritus* of the
Trustees, is the second recipient of the School’s Athens Prize.
Malcolm Wiener’s prolific accomplishments are rooted in a love for
archaeology that was inspired when, as a U.S. Navy lieutenant in the 1950s,
he visited Greece and its spectacular archaeological sites. “I was hooked,”
he recalls with a smile. Wiener went on to receive a J.D. from Harvard Law
School, and to found several investment management firms, while also
establishing himself in leading academic circles as an authority on Aegean
Prehistory.

*It would not be an exaggeration to emphasize that Cotsen has been the
greatest benefactor of the Gennadeion since Ioannes Gennadius himself.*
*Lloyd E. Cotsen*, former President of the ASCSA Trustees and the first
Chairman of the Overseers, is the second recipient of the Gennadius Prize.
After receiving his A.B. from Princeton University in 1950, Cotsen served
as a Lieutenant J.G. in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. The following
summer he served as the Field Architect for the ASCSA excavations at Lerna,
producing illustrations that are essential for the understanding of that
important Bronze Age site. After receiving his MBA from Harvard Business
School in 1957, he began a long and successful career at Neutrogena
Corporation (ultimately becoming Chairman and CEO), but he returned to
Greece every summer for more than 20 seasons to execute the architectural
drawings for the excavations at Lerna, Kea and Pylos. Over this long
period, he developed a strong attachment to the ASCSA . . .
