Subject: [MELANET-L] Turkish National Library sold books to a junk company
Dear Mela-netters,
For those of you fluent in Turkish, hereunder an article concerning the latest scandal at the Turkish National Library.
http://www.hurriyet.com.tr/kultur-sanat/25310113.asp
The library sold 147 tons of books to a junk company at a price of 7 to 25 cents a kg. Most of them were antiquarian titles and serial in Armenian, Greek and Karamanlica (Turkish using Greek alphabet). The reason is that the TNL does not have staff who can read Armenian, Greek, Hebrew, Judeospanish or Assyrian.

Preconference
“Retrofit: Exploring Space, Place and the Artifact in Special Collections”
Las Vegas, Nevada
Tuesday-Friday, June 24-27, 2014
We invite proposals for papers for the 2014 RBMS Preconference, “Retrofit:
Exploring Space, Place and the Artifact in Special Collections.” Please
submit written proposals as described below of no more than 200 words
by *December
16, 2013* to rbrim(a)getty.edu<http://www.preconference14.rbms.info/mail%20to:rbrim@getty.edu.>
.
Today’s special collections librarians face persistent challenges in the
development, sharing and care of our collections, the creation and use of
space, and the definitions of our roles within the biome of intellectual
life. As a profession we continue to grow into new spaces and places
because of what we know and were taught by our predecessors spanning the
last fifty years. The preconference theme proposes to honor the past by
exploring from our 21st century perspective the topics that resonated with
our colleagues in the 1960s.
Conference organizers invite proposals for 20 minute talks on the following
subjects discussed at RBMS Preconferences from 1959-1963:
1. Bibliography
2. Preservation
3. Space planning for special collections
4. Book Arts
5. History of science
6. Automation/digitization
Paper proposals on 1960′s subject collections are also welcome.
This year the preconference also invites proposals from newer members with
less than five years in the profession for a special panel dedicated to
their work.
Please visit the preconference Web site for more information about the
program and scholarships for first-time attendees:
