Aegean
Libraries in the Aegean
FRIDAY, 26 OCTOBER 2012 14:49
Aegean University took a few months ago the initiative to establish
lending libraries to the widest possible circulation of books among
members of the academic community. Operating conditions and lending is
different and simpler than the standard libraries. The rationale is
equally simple and summed up by a slogan, suggestion and
simultaneously reminder: "He came back with. I belong to everyone. "
The dean of the University of the Aegean, Paris Tsartas, urges support
the initiative through the following open letter:
"Just because we believe that the book is something very important ...
We would like to inform you about the effort that began in 2011 at the
Aegean University to create the University Libraries Literary
Foundation Units. The entire academic community (students, teaching
and administrative staff) will have the opportunity to borrow books,
mainly Greek and contemporary world literature, history and political
monographs and return them to mediate the classic lending process.
There is no record of people who borrow books nor loan period. Record
books will be found in libraries, on the inside cover of which is
stamp will indicate: "He returned with. I belong to everyone. " The
main objective of this action is to enhance both the presence of
literary books in our everyday life, the cultivation of filanagnosias
and a sense of responsibility to return the book without any
commitments.
The University of the Aegean is one polynisiotiko Foundation, which
operates in six islands of the Aegean (Mytilene, Chios, Samos, Rhodes,
Syros and Lemnos). In 27 years of operation, managed to create and
maintain a high quality, distinguished, internationalized and
competitive environment studies, earning his academic presence, an
important position among the Greek and European Universities. With 18
Departments and 28 Postgraduate Courses, managed to bring substantial
research and culture through the development of modern and innovative
interdisciplinary subjects which meet both the expectations of
students / of three and the demands of society, research and labor
market.
In this context, we would like to ask your help both in supplying
books and communicating the message, where you think there would be a
response. Choose books that no longer serve you and help us create the
Literary University Libraries. Unfortunately, there is no financial
ability to purchase the books for your own contribution is very
important and crucial.
We remain at your disposal and our affiliates (Mrs. E. Broomsticks
tel: 22510 36171, and others. Dede I. 210 64 9210 2) for further
clarification. "

Pilotless Press
Paper plane
A paper plane landed in our hands. We noticed writing on the paper and
quickly unfolded it to see what was inside.
Today at 6 d.o.g.s. bar, Pilotpress Press, an independent micropress
company, is launching its first edition, "The Mundane History of
Lockwood Heights."
The three creators behind Pilotpress Press sought to publish the short
story by Allen Kechagiar and ended up founding a publishing house that
prints chapbooks (pocket size booklets) in English.
Fresh off the press, we eagerly delved into our own limited edition
chapbook (one of 300!). This hush-hush launch kicks off at 20:30—hurry
and get your own copy of the "The Mundane History of Lockwood
Heights!"
P.S. The Pilotless Press intends to continue its journey of publishing
short stories by Greek authors in English.

Tod-Oirat-Old Kalmyk Romanization Table Approved
The ALA-LC Romanization tables are developed jointly by the Library of Congress (LC) and the American Library Association (ALA). Romanization schemes enable the cataloging of foreign language materials. Romanized cataloging in turn supports circulation, acquisitions, serials check-in, shelflisting, shelving, and reference, particularly in library catalogs that are unable to display non-roman alphabet information.
The ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: Asian and African Materials (CC:AAM) recently received and reviewed a proposal for new Tod-Oirat-Old Kalmyk romanization table. The table has subsequently been approved.
The Tod-Oirat-Old Kalmyk romanization table is now available for downloading from the ALA-LC Romanization Tables webpage<http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html>.
Please direct any questions about romanization tables to Bruce Johnson, Policy and Standards Division (bjoh(a)loc.gov<mailto:bjoh@loc.gov>).

Greek Publishing House in Istanbul’s Next Book
By Christina Flora on October 22, 2012 In Culture, Turkey
Istos, the first Greek publishing house in Istanbul in 50 years, begun
by a group of seven Greeks and Turks, has released a new Greek
language novel,
Postponements and Descents (Anavoles kai Katiforoi,)
A review appeared in the Radikal newspaper on Oct. 13.
The novel, translated from Turkish by Tim Drayton, is the story of two
people from the 1964 generation, Dimitris and Giorgios, who were
thrown out thrown out as part of by the Turkish government of many
Greeks. It was seen as a move involving the crisis in Cyprus.
It is about remaining rootless, being unable to settle in, not being
‘local’ and the inability to feel at home. The two, destined to remain
foreign wherever they go, appear to lead suspended lives thanks to
decisions which are postponed. Their lives, full of indecision, take
them willy-nilly on an ever downward descent.
Istos said it wants to publish more Greek language books to support
the growing demand in Turkey to learn Greek. Its first book by an
Istanbul Greek, Dositheos Anagnostopoulos, the Orthodox Patriarchate
spokesman, related to the problems the Greeks of Turkey had to face
upon their arrival in Greece in the 1960′s.

3 x Research Fellows - Collaborative EuropeaN Digital/Archival
Infrastructure (CENDARI)
University of Birmingham - College of Arts and Law - School of History and
Cultures Starting salary £27,578 a year, in a range up to £35,938 a year,
with potential progression to £38,140 a year
The School of History and Cultures at the University of Birmingham seeks to
appoint 3 Postdoctoral Research Fellows for three years to work on an
EU-funded international collaborative project (Collaborative EuropeaN
Digital/Archival Infrastructure - CENDARI).
CENDARI will provide and facilitate access to existing archives and
resources in Europe for the study of medieval and modern European history
through the development of an 'enquiry environment'. This environment will
increase access to records of historic importance across the European
Research Area, creating a powerful new platform for accessing and
investigating historical data in a transnational fashion overcoming the
national and institutional data silos that now exist. It will leverage the
power of the European infrastructure for Digital Humanities (DARIAH)
bringing these technical experts together with leading historians and
existing research infrastructures (archives, libraries and individual
digital projects) within a programme of technical research informed by
cutting edge reflection on the impact of the digital age on scholarly
practice.
Two domains have been chosen as case studies to develop this flexible
research environment, in the first instance for historical research, but
easily adaptable in future for other humanities domains. The first case
study will be in the area of First World War studies, a timely area of
research as we are fast approaching the centenary of this pan-European
conflict that is already generating much interest from academics to the
general public across Europe. The second case study will focus on medieval
history in the creation of an Atlas of Medieval Cultures that will develop
new paradigms from which to investigate and bridge linguistic, cultural and
spatial boundaries.
We are therefore looking for historians of Europe to join an international
and interdisciplinary team of scholars including historians, archivists and
librarians, e-science and digital humanities specialists.
The post holders will have a PhD in European History (or equivalent), be
fluent in English and in another European language at least. They will be
able to demonstrate their capacity to operate successfully in an
interdisciplinary, international and multilingual research environment.
The post holders will work with the Principal Investigator, Dr Pierre
Purseigle, on several work packages including "Training and Transnational
Access Coordination", "Methodology and Archive User Requirements",
"Investigation and Description of Archives", "Research Processes and System
Architecture", and "Research Spaces".
For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Pierre Purseigle at the
Department of History, School of History and Cultures, The University of
Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham B15 2TT. Email: p.purseigle(a)bham.ac.uk
Closing date: 10th May 2012

Greek emigration in Czechoslovakia (1948-1968) - From one split to another
[Territories Series, Volume 12]
Paperback, 155 x 220, 278 pages, 7 images,
ISBN 978-80-7363-404-9, EAN 9788073634049,
First published 15 October 2012.
The present study introduces a historical Czech reader with hitherto
little explored problem - the emergence and forming Greek emigration
in Czechoslovakia. It focuses primarily on monitoring political life
of emigration, which was closely associated with the Communist Party
of Greece. Special emphasis is then placed in the publication to the
question of identity formation of immigrants in relation to the
effects of two splitting Greek communists during the de-Stalinization
and subsequently during the Prague Spring. The themes, such as the
question of repatriation of Greek immigrants, are examined in the
political and socio-cultural level in the context of political
developments in Greece and Czechoslovakia.
Published in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Sciences.
