Hello colleagues –
Salve Regina University, Newport, RI, received a large gift of books that
contained many foreign-language items. These books do not fit our
collection development policy, and we are hoping that other libraries would
like to add them to their collections.
My coworker, Julie Swierczek, has prepared the following list of available
titles arranged by language and author. After each title, she has listed an
approximate count of the holdings in OCLC, although she based that number on
several records. (She searched only by author, title, and year, and gave a
count of all of the holdings that resulted.) If you have any questions about
a particular volume, please contact Julie directly (
Julie.swierczek(a)salve.edu<mailto:Julie.swierczek@salve.edu>, 401-341-2172)
and she can look up more precise information for that item. If you are
interested in taking any of these volumes, please let Julie know as soon as
possible (Julie.swierczek(a)salve.edu<mailto:Julie.swierczek@salve.edu>,
401-341-2172). The receiving library may be asked to cover shipping costs.
The series by Croatian author Julius Zeyer is particularly nice.
Sincerely,
Maria Bernier

Attend the OCLC Research Survey of Archives and Special Collections Webinar
on Thursday, 28 October at 2 p.m. EDT (11:00 a.m. PDT) 18:00)
Attend this webinar to learn about major outcomes of the forthcoming report,
Taking Our Pulse: The OCLC Research Survey of Special Collections and
Archives in Academic and Research Libraries. Program Officer Jackie Dooley
will provide an overview of the project, in which 275 institutions across
the U.S. and Canada were surveyed to determine norms across the community
and to provide data to support decision-making and priority setting. A few
key data points to whet your appetite: far too many rare and unique
materials remain ³hidden²; the size of collections is growing at an
incredible pace; most institutions report increased numbers of onsite users;
staffing generally remains stable; and digitization and born-digital
archival records emerged as two of the three most challenging issues.
This 60-minute session will include ample time for an open discussion about
the implications of the survey results for the special collections and
archives community, including the recommended action items included in the
report, which will be published tomorrow (URL forthcoming).
Webinar participation is free and open to all. Advance registration is
required.

Colleagues,
For list-members in the extended Dallas-Fort Worth area and for those
who may be in the region in late October:
"The Codex, the Digital Image, and the Problems of Presence"
A lecture by Michael F. Suarez, S.J.
Director, Rare Book School
Professor of English and University Professor, University of Virginia
This lecture will consider how digital surrogates are changing the
ways we think about books and what the implications of these changes
might be. In turn, it asks how books and bibliographical reflection
might usefully change the ways we think about 'books' delivered to us
as digital images. Insights from art history, philosophy, and
anthropology are adduced to enrich our thinking about this timely
subject.
