The deadline to apply for the New-York Historical Society’s prestigious
fellowship program for the 2016–2017 academic year has been extended
to *January
19, 2016*. Designed to encourage and promote the use of New-York
Historical’s extraordinary collections of documents, artifacts, and works
of art detailing American history from the perspective of New York City,
the fellowships are open to scholars at various times during their academic
careers. Details about applications, residency, stipends, and past fellows
are available by visiting http://www.nyhistory.org/library/fellowships.
The nine fellowships available for the 2016–2017 academic year include:
*Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Women’s History*
To celebrate the opening of its groundbreaking Center for the Study of
Women's History
<http://www.nyhistory.org/press/releases/new-york-historical-society-establi…>,
the New-York Historical Society is inaugurating a new fellowship devoted
exclusively to the study of women’s history. This program will support the
Center’s vision and enrich its intellectual network to include a diverse
group of dedicated fellows and scholars. Together with New-York Historical
staff, the selected fellows will explore the four centuries of New York
women’s history, offering a vibrant series of scholarly talks, rotating
exhibitions, and new research opportunities.
Complementing the existing suite of research fellowships currently offered
at New-York Historical, the three new Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in
Women's History will be specifically focused on the field of public
history. Through this initiative, New-York Historical enriches its public
reach by engaging a community of eminent scholars who serve as advisers and
collaborate with curators and historians. We work with college and
university faculties nationwide to produce and incorporate the latest
scholarship in our programs and exhibitions for general audiences.
Applicants for the Mellon Pre-doctoral Fellowship must be enrolled in a
Ph.D. program in the humanities and be on track to completing their degree.
Two Pre-doctoral Fellows will be in-residence between September 1, 2016,
and June 30, 2017, with a stipend of $15,000 per year.
*Bernard and Irene Schwartz Fellowships*
Offered jointly with Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts,
two Bernard and Irene Schwartz Fellowships are open to scholars who will
have completed the Ph.D. in History or American Studies before the end of
the 2015–2016 academic year. Fellows will teach one course each semester
for the academic year at Eugene Lang College and also will carry on
research projects in residence at the New-York Historical Society. These
fellowships carry a stipend of $60,000 per year and full benefits.
Fellowship will begin September 1, 2016, and end June 30, 2017.
*Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowships*
Two Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellowships will be awarded to candidates
who have held the Ph.D. for three to five years. Research projects may
include the conversion of a dissertation into a publishable manuscript or
the initiation of new research, based on the resources of the New-York
Historical Society. The ten-month residency will carry a stipend of
$60,000, plus benefits. Fellowship will begin September 1, 2016, and end
June 30, 2017.

Humanities will be offered for research at the New-York Historical Society.
The fellowship is available to individuals who have completed their formal
professional training and have a strong record of accomplishment within
their field. There is no restriction relating to age or academic status.
Foreign nationals are eligible to apply if they have lived in the United
States for at least three years immediately preceding the application
deadline. The ten-month residency will carry a stipend of $42,000, plus

collections of the New-York Historical Society. Research is to be conducted
for two to four weeks for a stipend of between $1,500–$2,000.

Endowment for the Humanities, Sid Lapidus, The Lehrman Institute, and
Patricia and John Klingenstein. All fellows receive research stipends while
in residency.
*ABOUT THE NEW-YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY*
The New-York Historical Society, one of America’s pre-eminent cultural
institutions, is dedicated to fostering research and presenting history and
art exhibitions and public programs that reveal the dynamism of history and
its influence on the world of today. Founded in 1804, New-York Historical
has a mission to explore the richly layered history of New York City and
State and the country, and to serve as a national forum for the discussion
of issues surrounding the making and meaning of history.
*ABOUT THE PATRICIA D. KLINGENSTEIN LIBRARY*
The New-York Historical Society’s Patricia D. Klingenstein Library is one
of the oldest and most distinguished in the United States, containing more
than three million books, pamphlets, maps, atlases, newspapers, broadsides,
music sheets, manuscripts, prints, photographs, and architectural drawings.

18th-century newspapers in the United States; an outstanding collection of
materials documenting slavery and Reconstruction; an exceptional collection
of Civil War material, including Ulysses S. Grant’s terms of surrender for
Robert E. Lee; collections relating to trials in the United States prior to
1860; American fiction, poetry and *belles-lettres* prior to 1850; a broad
range of materials relating to the history of the circus; and American

Christmas in Athens 55 Years Ago

===========================
[image: greekstars]In December 1960, Athens was clean, shiny and wore its
Christmas lights and decorations with gusto .
Two great photographers, Costas Balafas and Dimitris Harisiadis captured
the Christmas spirit in Athens,
in brilliant color and artistic black and white.
Athens had no need for a giant Christmas tree at Syntagma Square, concerts
and street performances, or bright lights everywhere. The celebratory,
optimistic mood of its citizens was bright enough to light Greece’s capital
in the most splendid way.
Christmas gifts and acts of charity did not need corporate sponsoring.
People gave from their hearts
and dressing as Santa Claus was not a profession.
People gathered at Syntagma and Omonoia Squares and enjoyed the festive
atmosphere,
while the busy Panepistimiou and Stadiou streets were bustling with traffic
as shoppers were
rushing for their Christmas shopping.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2016 Platzman Fellowship
program.
The University of Chicago Library invites applications for short-term
research fellowships for the summer of 2016. Any visiting researcher,
writer, or artist residing more than 100 miles from Chicago, and whose
project requires on-site consultation of University of Chicago Library
collections, primarily archives, manuscripts, rare books, or other
materials in the Special Collections Research Center, is eligible. Support
for beginning scholars is a priority of the program. Applications in the
fields of late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century physics or physical
chemistry, or nineteenth-century classical opera, will receive special
consideration.
Awards will be made based on the applicant's ability to complete the
proposed on-site research successfully within the timeframe of the
fellowship. Applicants should explain why the project cannot be conducted
without on-site access to the original materials and the extent to which
University of Chicago Library collections are central to the research. Up
to $3,000 of support will be awarded to help cover estimated travel,
living, and research expenses. Applications from women, minorities, and
persons with disabilities are encouraged.
*The deadline for applications is February 15, 2016. Notice of awards will
be made by March 18, 2016, for use between June 1, 2016, and October 1,
2016.*
*Applicants must provide the following information:*
- A cover letter (not to exceed one page) including the project title; a
brief summary; estimated dates of on-site research; and a budget for
travel, living, and research expenses during the period of on-site research
- A research proposal not to exceed three double-spaced pages.
Applicants should include references to specific archival finding aids and
catalog records of particular relevance to their proposed project whenever
possible.
- A curriculum vitae of no longer than two pages
- Two letters of support from academic or other scholars. References may
be sent with the application or separately.
Submit application *in one electronic file* to:

In the OCLA record [# 46987652] the pictures are attributed to Heinrich
Maria von Hess (who has no known connection to Greece) whereas his brother
Peter Heinrich Lambert von Hess was closely involved with King Otto :
<<In 1833, at Ludwig <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_I_of_Bavaria>'s
request, he accompanied Otto of Greece
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_of_Greece> to the newly formed Kingdom
of Greece, where at Athens <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athens> he
gathered materials for pictures of the war of liberation. The sketches
which he then made were placed, forty in number, in the Pinakothek
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinakothek>, after being copied in wax on a
large scale by Nilsen <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nilsen>, in the
northern arcades of the Hofgarten at Munich
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofgarten_(Munich)>. >>
This link also shows a selection of the lovely lithographs illustrated in
the book cited above

PS : I always loved the Bouboulina image, that of the lady telling the lads
exactly where to look, and the one of Mavrokordato trying so hard to look
martial, though his spectacles just make him seem rather muddled.<g>

I am interested in putting together a panel for the 2016 ALADN Conference
which will take place
in Boston, MA from June 1 – 4, 2016.
Academic Library Advancement and Development Network (ALADN) explores
issues of interest, offers networking, and assists in mutual
problem-solving for professionals involved in advancement and development
for academic and research libraries.
The panel I am proposing would focus on the nurturing relationships that
academic library special collections typically build with individuals, book
dealers, organizations, and corporations which often yield goodwill,
financial donations, and gift-in-kind support.
A few aspects that this panel could explore include:
- book collectors - research, building collections, and planned donations
- book dealers - sharing of item research information, collaborative
thematic exhibits/displays b/w universities and local bookstores
- corporations - asking for their assistance, particularly re.
innovation & technology
- The goodwill garnered through no licensing fees for use of special
collections content
The panel is an hour in length. If you can attend the ALADN Conference and
can address the nature of special collections relationships, ethical/legal
considerations of those close relationships, and outcomes in terms of
fundraising and advancement in an impassioned and concise manner, I'd enjoy
hearing from you by January 4th.
Thank you!

Curiosity and critical thinking skills are habits of mind that librarians,
archivists, and museum educators strive to develop and exercise in their
students, researchers, and visitors. Material culture and special
collections encourage a multimodal approach to learning that can complement
and extend traditional models of information literacy. This satellite
conference will feature both practice and theory on the myriad ways in
which primary sources and museum collections can be integrated into
instructional programs.
We welcome proposals from library and museum practitioners, educators, and
researchers from around the world. Topics of interest include (but are not
limited to):
· Instructional Design and Delivery
o Active learning and class session design
o Beyond the humanities: connecting with the sciences and social sciences
o Visual literacy
· Program Administration
o Assessment and analytics
o Mapping to learning outcomes and institutional mission
o Programmatic, developmental approach vs. one size fits all
· Resources
o Traveling trunks and online teaching kits
o Building online collections and using digital objects in instruction
o Professional development/instructional design resources
Proposal formats can include research papers, practical presentations,
panels, interactive workshops, pecha kucha/lightning rounds, and poster
sessions.
*How to Submit a Proposal (Deadline February 1, 2016)*
All proposals must be submitted by February 1, 2016, using the Proposal
Submission Form.
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1k_Sr4cZsme23HMk-xzE5eoTfGnwXj9gKG7JQT1x1Mb…>
First-time
presenters and new professionals are encouraged to apply. Doctoral/Graduate
students are also invited to participate. All satellite presentations will
be delivered in English. Notification of acceptance will be sent by March
21, 2016.
*Please note*
At least one of the presenters must register and attend the satellite to
deliver the presentation. All expenses, including registration for the
conference, travel, accommodation etc., are the responsibility of the
authors/presenters. No financial support can be provided by IFLA, but a
letter of invitation can be issued to authors.
Papers presented at the IFLA 2016 Information Literacy Satellite will be
made available online via the IFLA Library: http://library.ifla.org/
The satellite is scheduled for 1 ½ days (Thursday, August 11, from 8am-6pm,

CALL FOR PAPERS:
*“A common international standard for rare materials cataloguing? Why? And
how?” *
22nd February 2016, Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (Lisbon)
The Rare Books and Special Collections Section of IFLA (RBSCS) invite paper
proposals for a one-day conference being held at the Biblioteca Nacional de
Portugal (Lisbon) on the 22 February 2016, sponsored by the IFLA RBSCS and
the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal.
This conference will aim to bring the discussion of changing trends and
standards for the description of early printed books and special
collections in all formats, for instance archives, audio-visual and
born-digital material, to an international stage. In an age when catalogues
and metadata are shared across libraries, systems and borders, should there
be a common international standard for the cataloguing of rare books and
special collections? Is this a desirable or attainable goal? What might
such a common standard look like, and how might it be achieved?
Possible topics:
- existing national and international standards
- case studies of the adoption, adaptation or rejection of particular
cataloguing standards at institutional or national level
- methodology and delivery of shared cataloguing programmes and data
interoperability
- integrating standards for different formats
- theoretical, methodological or historical perspectives
- the needs of researchers and other users, or of cataloguers and other
data creators
Papers should be 20 minutes in length and can be in any of any of the seven
official IFLA languages <http://www.ifla.org/language-policy>.
The committee will also accept proposals for posters (maximum width of
80cm) which can be displayed in the conference venue on the day of the
event.
Please submit abstracts for papers or posters of up to 500 words to Daryl
Green, Section Information Coordinator, dtg4(a)st-andrews.ac.uk
Deadline: 8 January 2016
