Greek Academic Libraries expand agreement with Elsevier
The world's first E-Only consortia expands Elsevier portfolio for books on
ScienceDirect and Referex Engineering
Amsterdam, 21 February 2007 -- Elsevier announces the signing of a
2-year agreement with the Hellenic Academic Libraries Link (HEAL
Link), a consortium of 57 Greek educational and research institutions
expanding their Elsevier access to books on ScienceDirect and
Engineering Village's reference database, Referex Engineering. The
current agreement expands the existing 2005 agreement which provided
HEAL Link members with full access to Scopus, ScienceDirect's eight
million full-text articles and Elsevier's three million article
Backfiles collection.
HEAL Link chose to expand researchers' access to include the
ScienceDirect E-books collection plus over 400 full-text professional
reference titles from Referex Engineering. Each delivers leading
content and state-of-the-art functionality. ScienceDirect has recently
announced a 4,000 title expansion for 2007 complementing its fully
linked and cross-searchable electronic books and journals platform.
"As part of our strategy to provide our researchers with quality
electronic resources I am pleased we have negotiated this deal with
Elsevier as it further extends our portfolio of electronic materials,"
stated Professor Vassilios J. Papazoglou, Chairman of the HEAL-Link
Consortium. "The addition of the ScienceDirect and Engineering
electronic books collections provides our researchers with great
added value. Moreover, this is another great example of success in an
agreement as all parties HEAL-Link, Elsevier, and Swets Information
Services, the agent who has undertaken the Consortiums financial
administration benefit."
"It is a continuing honor to provide the HEAL-Link libraries, one of
the world's first e-only consortia, with expanded access to a wide
range of Elsevier's key services and projects. We believe strongly
that ScienceDirect, the Backfiles collection, Scopus and Engineering
Village contribute significantly to the researcher' experience not to
mention productivity," noted Frank Vrancken Peeters, Managing
Director, Academic & Government, Elsevier Science & Technology.

Dear all goodmorning and my best wishes for a happy 2007.
Rhea's message had woke me up concerning my "obligation" coming out from Gennadious meeting on December, on puting together all greek inititatives on providing greek digital content on web or elsewhere.
As a matter of fact I had already done the most of the job a couple of weeks ago but as usually I postponed posting it to the list.
Well now here it is my initial list with all resources I could find. Resources are presented in an excel table with usefull data (url, owner, type, format, access info etc).
As I said above this must be considered only as a first step towards a full inventory of all greek digital initiatives. As it came out of the Genadious meeting we should create a registry for that reason that it would be also usefull to us here in Greece to avoid doing the same job more than once. In that sense my next step consists of the following:
- gather more data about new projects coming out this next period (and there will be a lot as major digitization projects funded by the Information Society Program will be presented). If anyone knows a project I haven't included in the list just name it!
- concerning collections and databases, to gather data about the titles that are digitized and/or indexed (I already have the most of this data, but somehow I have to orginize it... see next point). Anyway I can always just put in an excel table and later on we can import all this data into a nice database system.
- to work on the stuctrure of such a registry: what information do we need to know for every resource and to what level. Any ideas and feedback will be wellcome. Of course this will take some time and a lot of cooperation and understanding between us. We'll see.
I hope all these will be usefull to somebody.
I am waiting for your feedback
Sincerely

The British Library and the Public Sector Spending Review
The British Library web site states that "We are working with the
Department of Culture, Media and Sport to assist them to make the best
case for the British Library in the current comprehensive spending
review. They continue to press our case to the Treasury, but all
commentators agree that this will be a tight spending review."
Background:
The British Library is the world's greatest research library. Their
collections and expertise can be used by everyone who needs to do
research for academic, public service, personal or commercial
purposes. They are the linchpin of the UK knowledge economy on which
so much contemporary enterprise, creativity and learning depends.
The Library recognises the constraints of the current funding round.
They are limiting their spending round bid to cover inflation costs
and protect their baseline activities, including the completion of
their three year storage build. They have budgeted for no new capital
programmes.
The library has helped itself through modernisation and an efficiency
drive which has already saved £40 million, which has been redirected
to supporting our core activities. They have also made great progress
in attracting funding from other sources for projects such as the new
Centre for Conservation.
Cuts to their funding threaten:
Public access to their collections.
They will have to limit the Reading Room opening hours, or charge for
admission. They will have to close two galleries and be unable to
capitalise on the opening of the Eurostar terminal at St Pancras.
The excellence of the world's greatest research library:
They will have to cut their spending on research journals and books,
which will undermine 250 years of collecting and damage the UK's
position in the world research ranking.
The establishment of a digital library for the UK:
They will be unable to fulfil their statutory obligations for legal
deposit of electronic material, and UK digital information will be
lost to future generations.
The future of the national newspaper collection:
30,000 current readers will no longer have access, and the growing
popular use of newspapers as primary sources for sports and family
history research will develop no further.
Lynne Brindley, the Chief Executive of the British Library has asked
those who feel strongly about this issue to contact the library and
explain "why the British Library is important to them and to give the
British library permission to use your letter in their campaign.
If these proposed financial cuts concern you then e-mail
chief-executive(a)bl.uk with your name, contact number and message, or
write to Lynne Brindley, Chief Executive, The British Library, 96
Euston Road, London NW1 2DB
And why not sign the on-line petition: http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/library/
