Dear list members,
I am helping a professor of political science to find
a library interested in acquiring a collection of books
on 1960s politics. There are about 250 books. In addition
there are pamphlets, posters, and flyers on student protests
and Vietnam. The donor would like for them to be kept
together as a collection.
The books are being offered as a donation, with the recipient
to pay shipping costs.
If interested, please let me know at jkingsolver(a)earthlink.net
Thank you,
Joy Kingsolver, C.A.

Parthenon Photo Exhibition Profiled in “Ellada” Greek-Russian Magazine
http://eu.greekreporter.com/2011/03/25/parthenon-photo-exhibition-profiled-…
Posted on 25 March 2011 by Polina Dimea
A special feature in the Russian magazine “Ellada” (Greece), which is
published in Moscow, was dedicated to the “Marbles” photo exhibition
and its creator Mr. Apostolos Papapostolou. The above mentioned
magazine is the only printed medium in Russia specialized in topics
related to Greece and Cyprus.
The article outlines the profile and work of Mr. Papapostolou, who is
a professor in the Technological Educational Institution (TEI) of
Athens. It describes how art and technology are his big loves, and
actually a motivation for a remarkable photographic approach of the
Parthenon marbles.
The magazine points out: “The photos of Mr. Papapostolou were taken
from a different point of view with the contribution of digital
technology. Photos of the Acropolis monuments and marbles with blue
sky and clouds form a perfect combination of three modern and classic
elements”

An ambitious translation program
http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_wsite4_1_22/03/2011_384129
By Olga Sella
A first taste of an ambitious program was presented at the Academy of
Athens recently. Academy member and author Thanasis Valtinos unveiled
a new program regarding the training of young translators of Greek
literature, the training, in other words, of people translating Greek
works into foreign languages.
“When it comes to Greek literature, the big problem is for Greek works
to go beyond local borders and get translated,” said Valtinos. “In
order to achieve this, you need a number of top-level translators and
we don’t have enough.”
The program has come together thanks to the Academy of Athens, the
Kostas and Eleni Ourani Foundation and the Petrou Chari Foundation,
while the National Book Center of Greece (EKEBI), the European
Translation Center (EKEMEL) and the University of Athens will
participate in the training of foreign students studying Greek
literature and language. The program will further include funding for
the translation of Greek works aimed at international publishing
houses, though the amount of the annual funding which will come from
the Ourani Foundation has yet to be determined.
The venture’s headquarters will be housed on the fourth floor of 9
Valaoritou Street and every bursar will receive a monthly stipend of
1,200 euros -- the program will have a capacity of covering five to
six bursars every year, with scholarships being renewed for a period
of one to four years.
While the program is expected to launch in September, there are
various questions which remain unanswered: Who will undertake the
training and comprise the judging panel determining the final
selection of candidates are but two. In the meantime, however, the
announcement was met with a hopeful spirit. In the words of Valtinos,
“these are tough times, but instead of complaining, we wanted to take
this opportunity to act in a more positive way.”

Dear Colleagues,
The University of Michigan Special Collections Library is offering for
sale by closed bid more than 300 lots consisting of duplicate books
and other material accumulated over the course of several decades, or
several thousand books and serials in all. The material offered for
sale is representative of the collecting strengths of the Special
Collections Library, including items in the following areas: American
Literature, English Literature, Children's Literature, History,
Mathematics, Social Movements, Transportation History, and more.
Much of the material offered for sale came from donations of entire
private collections that inevitably contained titles already held.
Most of the material is not "ex library". We are sincerely grateful
to our many donors who recognized that even in giving us duplicates,
they could significantly benefit the University of Michigan Library.
Proceeds from this sale will be used to support future acquisitions
for the Special Collections Library.
I realize that most people cannot travel here to see the lots, but I
think you will find that the descriptions are deep enough (especially
for high end books with reserves) that you may be interested in
bidding sight unseen. All the descriptions are available online at:
http://www.lib.umich.edu/special-collections-library/book-sale
Bids are due March 25.
Sincerely,
Peggy Daub, Director
Special Collections Library
