May I bring your attention to a forthcoming conference, Click-On-Knowledge
2011: Web-based Knowledge and Contemporary Scholarship 11–13 May 2011.
As the title suggests, its quarry is how so-called web-based knowledge has
and will effect humanities scholarship.
The conference aims to gather providers of web-based
knowledge and ordinary humanities users of the same (two groups who seldom
meet and talk - or at least not enough).
The keynotes, therefore, are selected to reflect these two groups.
They include
Professor Michael S. Hart, founder of Project Gutenberg
IT-journalist Mark Malseed, author of The Google Story
Professor Peter Naur, Computer Scientist and winner of the Turing Prize
Professor Susan Schreibman, Director of the Digital Humanities Observatory
(DHO), the Royal Irish, Academy, Dublin
Dr. Linda Bree, Commissioning Editor, Cambridge University Press.
Since the conference is also designed to be virtual, physical participation will
not be necessary. Many people reading this list will not be in a position to
cover travel costs to Copenhagen and, indeed, obligatory trans-oceanic travel
for conferences may not represent the best future for global knowledge
exchange. Copenhagen University’s IT Media and its prestigious Project
Matterhorn will ensure that the online side of the conference runs according
to plan.
On a personal note, the conference strikes me (and it would, being one of the
organisers) as a perfect opportunity not only to experiment with an online
conference format but also to advance a discussion, which is already
unavoidable, in a far more informed direction.
I hope you feel encouraged to look through the conference website. The
deadline for the cfp is 1 December 2010

LONDON – One of the world's most important caches of Greek
manuscripts is going online, part of a growing number of ancient
documents to hit the Web in recent years.
The British Library said Monday that it was making
more than a quarter of its 1,000 volume-strong collection of handwritten
Greek texts available online free of charge, something curators there
hope will be a boon to historians, biblical scholars and students of
classical Greece alike.
Although the manuscripts — highlights of which
include a famous collection of Aesopic fables discovered on Mount Athos
in 1842 — have long been available to scholars who made the trip to the
British Library's reading rooms, curator Scot McKendrick said their
posting to the web was opening antiquity to the entire world.
McKendrick said that London could be an expensive
place to spend time poring over the Greek texts' tiny, faded script or
picking through hundreds of pages of parchment.
"Not every scholar can afford to come here weeks and
months on end," he said. The big attraction of browsing the texts online
"is the ability to do it at your own desk whenever you wish to do it —
and do it for free as well."
Although millions of books have been made available
online in recent years — notably through Google Books' mass scanning
program — ancient texts have taken much longer to emerge from the
archives.
They don't suffer from the copyright issues
complicating efforts to post contemporary works to the Web, but their
fragility makes them tough to handle. They have to be carefully cracked
open and photographed one page at a time, a process the British Library
said typically costs about 1 pound ($1.50) per page.
The library has moved aggressively to put large
swathes of its collection online, from 19th-century newspapers to the
jewels of its collection — The Lindisfarne Gospels, a selection of
Leonardo da Vinci's sketches and the Codex Sinaiticus, the oldest surviving complete copy of the Christian Bible.
The library's Greek manuscript project was funded by
the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, which supports Greek-related
initiatives in arts and culture.
Another batch of about 250 documents are due to be published online in 2012.

Theophilos @ Benaki Museum
Theophilos : Works from the Collection of the Emporiki Bank
The exhibition contains a group of twenty paintings from the art
collection of the
Emboriki Bank of Greece. It offers the public an opportunity to see up-close a
representative sample of the oeuvre of this painter from Mytilene, which records
in his characteristic manner his involvement with painting.
The works in the collection include a selection of the usual themes chosen
by Theophilos Hadjimichael: scenes from history or mythology; images taken
from postcards and old lithographs or photographs; landscapes; and images
of everyday life.
The collection of these twenty works by Theophilos, shown in the exhibition,
belongs to the Emboriki Bank of Greece since the 1980s and, with rare
exceptions,
this is the first time it will be shown to the public in its entirety.
The exhibition is accompanied by the Emboriki Bank of Greece’s publication
*** Theophilos (Athens, 1967), edited by Yannis Tsarouchis and Yiorgos
Manousakis***
and with texts by Yannis Tsarouchis, a publication that brings
together over 300 works by the artist.
Throughout the duration of the exhibition there will be showings of
the special tribute filmed
for the series Paraskinio (Backstage), entitled
"2003 – Theophilos Again?", directed by Lakis Papastathis.

The concluding paragraph reads:
"Recent articles in the German and Swiss press have called
attention to the Warburg's travails. If the University of London
insists on following through with its plan, perhaps the German
authorities can find the means to bring the Warburg back to its
original home. That would certainly be preferable to watching as
philistines demolish a great European institution."
This plea by Anthony Grafton and Jeffrey Hamburger appears in the most
recent issue of _The New York Review of Books_, although the article
in the print version is longer and more detailed than the one online.
This reflects part of an ongoing effort to draw attention to the
problems faced:
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-07-20/warburg-institute-saved-from-nazis…
. Grafton's article is an extension of a piece, written on 8 April
2010, which was critical of certain administrative moves within major
British universities

this earlier article is only partially accessible at no charge).

Each year, the Friends of the Princeton University Library offer short-term
Library Research Grants to promote scholarly use of the library’s research
collections. Up to $3,500 is available per award and last year the Friends
made 22 awards totaling over $50,000.
Applications will be considered for scholarly use of archives, manuscripts,
rare books, and other rare and unique holdings of the Department of Rare
Books and Special Collections, including Mudd Library; as well as rare books
in Marquand Library of Art and Archaeology, and in the East Asian Library
(Gest Collection). Special grants are awarded in several areas: the
Program in Hellenic Studies supports a limited number of library fellowships
in Hellenic studies, and the Cotsen Children’s Library supports research in
its collection on aspects of children’s books. The Maxwell Fund supports
research on materials dealing with Portuguese-speaking cultures. The Sid
Lapidus '59 Research Fund for Studies of the Age of Revolution and the
Enlightenment in the Atlantic World covers work using materials pertinent to
this topic.
