For the past two years, the Open Greek and Latin Project
<http://www.dh.uni-leipzig.de/wo/projects/open-greek-and-latin-project/> team
in Leipzig has been collecting scanned editions of classical texts and
running optical character recognition (OCR) optimized for Greek and Latin
in an effort to build the largest and most comprehensive open-source
library of classical philology to date. The Harvard Library has committed
$50,000, using generous funding from Arcadia, to complete The First
Thousand Years of Greek segment of the Open Greek and Latin Project. The
First Thousand Years of Greek aims to serve as a prototype of the larger
project and will permit researchers to freely search and access a digital
corpus of Ancient Greek and download, modify and redistribute their textual
data so they can fully exploit new methods of analysis. Harvard’s support
will cover the raw data entry costs of corrected OCR and Text Encoding
Initiative Extensible Markup Language (TEI XML) to help complete the list
of standard Greek editions. Harvard College Library librarian Rhea Lesage
is working with the Center for Hellenic Studies <http://chs.harvard.edu/> and
the Open Greek and Latin Project team on this initiative.

Social Atlas of Athens
http://www.athenssocialatlas.gr/
The Social Atlas of Athens aims to highlight key structures and processes
that make up the social fabric of the city and some of the many ways in
which they are interwoven with the daily operation and wider, and the built
environment. The plurality of entries comprising the atlas from current and
past research work for Athens , which have generated data and
interpretations are usually not well known.
<snip>
The Atlas constitutes, in part, a continuation of that adopted 15 years ago
by the National Centre for Social Research and the University of Thessaly
(Social and Economic Atlas of Greece. The Cities). It differs, however,
because of its exclusive focus on Athens, but also because of this
electronic form that allows both greater freedom in setting up the
structure and, secondly, its continuing renewal by adding new entries and
update existing ones.

protections that should be offered to objects at risk from conflict within
and between countries and explain the fundamental and sometimes complex
legal and juridical questions affecting the acquisition and deacquisition,
digitization, reproduction, and publication of books, manuscripts, and
archival documents.
The cost of the course is 215 GBP for Association members and 240 GBP for
non-members. Two scholarships are available for Arab researchers and
heritage professionals living in the Arab World.
For more information and to register, visit the course webpages at

> The American Antiquarian Society is looking for a set of at least the
early volumes of Library Journal for its collection. Some years ago
someone deaccessioned our set. Today we see that was a mistake. We would
like to at lease acquire the volumes before 1940, but would love to have a
long run starting with 1876 onward. If anyone knows of a set that is
available, please contact me.
