Reminder that the March 30 deadline for submissions is just around the corner:
Calling all Special Collections Librarians, Archivists and Museum
Professionals Who Teach!
We seek submissions of innovative, hands-on classroom exercises
utilizing primary sources for an upcoming Libraries Unlimited
publication. The forthcoming book will provide cultural heritage
professionals with adaptable, template-based class exercises - think
of these as recipes that can be reused as is, or customized for
multiple situations. We solicit your easy-to-adapt, creative exercises
that includes a title, 2-5 learning objectives, intended audience,
collections/materials/preparation required, description of the
exercise mechanics or activity, and any assessment you’ve done. We
seek your submission by MARCH 30, 2013.
The exercises we want to include will teach lessons in "artifactual
literacy" and/or "archival intelligence." Artifactual literacy refers
to skills needed to interpret and analyze primary sources, including
concepts such as: evaluating authenticity, understanding historical
contextualization, identifying bias, understanding the physical
object, and deducing original audience and purpose. Archival
intelligence refers to skills needed to use archives and special
collections, such as: finding aid usage, understanding what kinds of
materials are held in archives and special collections, physical use
and handling of collections, and searching for primary sources.
Exercises making use of any source types are welcome, including rare
books, maps, manuscripts, ephemera, born digital, and even the unusual
types we know you are working with (video games, natural history
specimens, models, blueprints, comic books, graphic novels, LPs,
floppy disks and hard drives). The exercises may focus on teaching
undergraduates or graduate students, or may be geared toward public
outreach events, educating donors, our peers, and/or administrators.
We want your creative and inventive exercises for K-12 class visits as
well.
Co-editors Anne Bahde (Oregon State University), Heather Smedberg (UC
San Diego), and Mattie Taormina (Stanford University) look forward to
receiving your submissions. Please submit your exercise via our web
form by MARCH 30, 2013:
http://tinyurl.com/8h6dr6o
We know you're doing wonderful things with students, and this is a
great opportunity to share what you've been doing with colleagues
around the country.
Sincerely,
Anne Bahde (anne.bahde(a)oregonstate.edu)

The present study introduces a historical Czech reader with hitherto
little explored problem - the emergence and forming Greek emigration
in Czechoslovakia. It focuses primarily on monitoring political life
of emigration, which was closely associated with the Communist Party
of Greece. Special emphasis is then placed in the publication to the
question of identity formation of immigrants in relation to the
effects of two splitting Greek communists during the de-Stalinization
and subsequently during the Prague Spring. The themes, such as the
question of repatriation of Greek immigrants, are examined in the
political and socio-cultural level in the context of political
developments in Greece and Czechoslovakia.

Greek-German relations in the shadow of Nazism acquaints readers with
the hitherto little-explored issue of Greek-German relations in the
period after the Second World War. Richly illustrated historical study
leading Czech expert on the modern history of Greece Catherine Králové
is the first comprehensive monograph on the subject. It focuses
primarily on how the Greek society grappled with the legacy of the
Nazi occupation, in particular with the question of punishment of war
crimes. The themes examined in the political, socio-cultural, economic
and legal terms. It highlights that in this case played a key role in
economic interests. To this day, pending litigation between the Greek
victims of Nazism and the federal government also show that the topic
is still alive. Extra dimension beyond the Greek-German relations and
in its essence is applicable to the experiences of other states, which
were similarly affected by the Nazi occupation.

The following announcement is excerpted from an announcement on the
HMMLorientalia blog (http://hmmlorientalia.wordpress.com/). Please
feel free to forward this announcement to anyone who might be
interested.
“The Hill Museum & Manuscript Library (HMML) announces grants
available for cataloging work in its eastern Christian collections in
Arabic/Garšūnī, Armenian, Old Church Slavonic, and Syriac. These
grants are funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. … The grants
support full-time cataloging work for periods of one to six months,
and are renewable. The work may be done anywhere; residence at HMML is
not expected. Catalogers will be expected to prepare text-level
records for, ideally, 75 manuscripts per month (with these numbers
adjusted for genres with multiple texts per manuscript, such as
hagiography and homilies). … The grants offer a stipend of
$2500/month, with the added benefit of copies of two digitized
manuscripts from HMML’s collections each month at no cost, which may
be used for personal research. Those who wish to apply for a
cataloging grant may send their CV and a cover letter to Adam McCollum
(amccollum(a)csbsju.edu), to whom also any informal enquiries may be
sent.”
Additional details are available at HMMLorientalia.
