How to fix Europe’s monetary union: Views of leading economists
Richard Baldwin, Francesco Giavazzi 12 February 2016
Important progress has been made in repairing the design faults that the EZ

job half done. The eBook, which presents 18 chapters by leading economists
that hail from a broad range of nations and schools of thought, is surely
the most comprehensive collection of solutions that has ever been assembled.

*"Theft in libraries – facing the hidden truth"*
The IFLA Rare Books and Special Collections Section
<http://www.ifla.org/rare-books-and-special-collections> and the Preservation
and Conservation Core Activity <http://www.ifla.org/pac>invites interested
professionals to submit proposals for this open session to be held in
Columbus, Ohio, USA from 13-19 August 2016.
Theft in libraries and archives, by staff as well as outsiders, is an ever
present problem many institutions face. The session aims are to highlight
the importance of recording thefts internationally with the aim to
de-stigmatise the reporting of thefts (something which still many libraries
will not make publicly aware). It will also look at methods of raising
public awareness towards provenance of cultural heritage items, and to
continue to build bridges between the curatorial and commercial arms of the
cultural heritage profession.
We therefore invite proposals for papers which outline theft incidents
within libraries and archives in recent years, particularly from
collections which have experienced theft incidents, in order to set the
scene for the overall session and help to de-stigmatise the reporting of
theft in libraries. The session will be comprised of three presentations
from recent incidents of library or archive theft and then a panel
discussion on the topic which will include the presenters of the three
papers as well as invited respondents from the curatorial, commercial and
legal spheres of cultural heritage.

*"Quality management and preservation in the age of mass processing"*
The IFLA Preservation and Conservation Section
<http://www.ifla.org/preservation-and-conservation> joint with Rare Books
and Special Collections Section
<http://www.ifla.org/rare-books-and-special-collections> and Audiovisual
and Multimedia Section <http://www.ifla.org/avms> invites interested
professionals to submit proposals for the open session to be held in
Columbus, Ohio, USA from 13-19 August 2016.
In many institutions, preservation (physical and digital) plays an
increasingly important role, and the efforts in terms of staffing and
investment in this area are rising. But what about the performance review,
both in terms of measures applied (which are often carried out with
external service providers), as well as in terms of the internal library
processes themselves.
The need to replace single item workshop-related conservation by
production-wise batch processing becomes evident in any large-scale
programs from digitization to mass deacidification. However, pre-image
capture conservation preparation and any post-mass production housing
needed at the conclusion of the project are still part of the workflow.
Mass production still involves single item review, stabilization and
conservation.
How should these processes be organized, what tools are necessary and in
use, what standards are available? How do libraries solve the problem of
systematic documentation and single item tracking? How will heritage
institutions manage the increasing requirements with no extra provision of
resources?

Deseret Romanization Table Approved
The ALA-LC Romanization tables are developed jointly by the Library of Congress (LC) and the American Library Association (ALA). Romanization schemes enable the cataloging of foreign language materials. Romanized cataloging in turn supports circulation, acquisitions, serials check-in, shelflisting, shelving, and reference, particularly in library catalogs that are unable to display non-roman alphabet information.
The ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: Description and Access (CC:DA) recently received and reviewed a proposal for a new Deseret romanization table. The table has subsequently been approved.
The Deseret romanization table is now available for downloading from the ALA-LC Romanization Tables webpage<http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html> http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html .

The news item below invites scholars to contribute their ideas to the
development of a new manifesto for New Democracy.
I have a document that outlines the ideology of the Party as it was
developed in 1976, after the fall of the Junta, that might be an
interesting place to start

New Democracy calls for volunteers to help draft party manifesto
New Democracy has sent out an open invitation to non-party officials to
help draft the conservatives’ governing manifesto.
The call for academics, professionals and executives to come forward to
contribute voluntarily to the process of compiling the policy program is
aimed at making New Democracy more approachable to new voters as well as
injecting new blood into the party.
Those interested in contributing to the process have been asked to send
their CVs to the conservatives by February 23.
The only criteria are that the applicants must have a postgraduate degree,
excellent knowledge of English and “top communication skills.”
“New Democracy does not want to limit itself to the opinion of our own
party members – their contribution is going to be valuable anyway,” said
the party’s joint vice president Costis Hatzidakis on Tuesday.
“We want to open up to universities, to the market, to society and to
worthy Greeks who will be able to contribute toward the creation of a
modern and reliable program that incorporates the best European practices,”
he added.

The recent query about Cyprus led me to check into my files
There was an interesting book about Cyprus as it was in in 1954 published a
few years ago in the UK [Only 1 copy is listed in WorldCat]
The author has now issued a new, updated edition with more photographs
This was the original :
*Chamberlain, Richard. Cyprus Scenes and Way of Life in 1954 .
* UKCollective Colour, 2010. 1st UK Edition. ISBN: 095656190X.
In 1954 Richard Chamberlain and his
twin brother were conscripted into the British Army and sent off for duty
in Cyprus. The teenager has never before been outside England. He took an
old 127 camera and " As soon as we arrived I started photographing the
Cypriot people and way of life," ….The pictures taken more than 50 years
ago on black and white film, exert a strong nostalgic pull....most potent
of all is the evocation of a lost era. The photographs tell of a way of
life less frenetic than today, when people had time to stop and chat and
the pretty beaches hadn't fully been exploited by developers. Significant
changes in society hadn't yet fully manifested themselves, either - though
they were on the way and would all too quickly have an impact. In 1954, the
beautiful island was still a single entity...
And here is the updated version:
*Chamberlain, Richard. Cyprus Scenes and Way of Life in 1954 and 60 years
later in 2014. *UK: Collective Colour, 2014. 1st UK Edition. Soft Cover.
New Book from Publisher This book is the second edition of Richard
Chamberlain's collection of photos taken in 1954/55 while serving as a
National Serviceman. He has returned to Cyprus to revisit the same
locations, where possible, and to photograph the same scenes he saw 60
years before. The earlier pictures were taken around Famagusta in Northern
Cyprus before the island was partitioned in 1974. This paperback edition is
both black and white and colour.
You can see a YouTube video about an exhibit of his delightful pictures

Subject: women in Cyprus in the 1960s - 1970s
Dear Colleagues,
I received the following email (and list of questions) from a professor at Drew University, and have her permission to forward her queries to you. The topics/questions are very broad-based—each could be a dissertation of its own! I’ve sent her some suggestions, particularly about laws and labor legislation in Cyprus and the LC country reports for Cyprus, etc., but questions 1-3 are so broad, I barely knew where to begin, particularly since we have a small Greek collection, and definitely nothing “special” about Cyprus.
If you think you might be able to help her (at least from the Greek side), please contact her directly. She does read Greek and has a translator for anything useful that might be in Turkish. I tried adding the text of the 4 questions she’d like to answer, but it made the email message too large for our listserve. If you think you’d like to work on this query, I can send you her detailed list of questions separately.
Many thanks.
June
Dear June:
My goal is to be published by The Journal of Cyprus Studies. In order to provide a balanced presentation I must include more information about the northern part of Cyprus. The journal has accepted the article pending more research and revisions.
All four questions pertain to the status of women in northern Cyprus. The answers must be from the point of view of women who lived in northern Cyprus during the post-colonial decade: 1960-1970. However, there may be government documents or books and articles by intellectuals and academics that reveal the effect of the presence of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force on the Cyprus economy and welfare (particularly the health and education of women) during the post-colonial decade. For example, was there an improvement in the longevity of women after UNFICYP arrived? The answer to this question would be a salient point. My article covers these ten years only.
The article entitled, "The Profound Transformation from Poverty to Professionalism of Cypriot Women a a Consequence of the Transition to Paid Work" is based on a chapter in my dissertation (which is online) -- Cyprus,1960-1970: An Intellectual History of the Cold War Toll, the United Nations, and Decolonization.
Do you have any special collections on Cyprus?
Thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Dr. Margaret W. Bartlett, Doctor of Letters in Historical Studies and Contemporary Studies, Drew University, 2013. Author of Cyprus, The United Nations, and the Quest for Unity, 2007.
