[Original Drawing] Caricature of Spiro AgnewJeff MacNelly
An original drawing by three time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial
cartoonist Jeff MacNelly. This large scale caricature -- it measures 33” x
24” -- of Nixon’s Vice-President Spiro Agnew is signed by MacNelly and
dated ‘73, the year Agnew resigned from office. This drawing is from
relatively early in MacNelly’s career, though he has already won one of his
Pulitzers the year before. On brown paper, which has a 2” closed tear not
affecting the drawing.

2 unique items from a colleague I met in San Francisco
16. [Photography / Orientalism / Women]. Zangaki [Adelphoi Zangaki]. *No.
549 Danseuses arabes [with] No. 897 Le Promenade*. [Egypt]: [Adelphoi
Zangaki], Circa 1870. Two albumen photographs, 28 x 22 cm, affixed one on
each side of a 34.5 cm x 28 cm sheet of stiff stock. Reinforced with cloth
on one edge and probably removed from a larger album, of which this was one
leaf. Photographs signed "Zangaki" and titled in French in the negative,
with handwritten English titles in ink in the margin below. Light toning
and dampstaining to margins, not affecting photographs; light rippling.
Very Good. (1661)
Two photographs by the Zangaki brothers, a pair of Greek photographers who
were among the earliest to photograph Egypt when it became a tourist
destination in the latter half of the 19th century, particularly for
Europeans and Americans on the Grand Tour. The brothers sometimes worked
with French photographer Hippolyte Arnoux, and given the French titles in
these photographs, may have done so here.
The photographs provide views of the daily life of Egyptian women at the
time: in one, two women dancers wear traditional dress and finger cymbals,
and in the other, a woman in a niqāb rides a donkey led by a man down the
street. In both, the subjects appear at ease and look directly at the
camera.
Uncommon in this format and condition.

*Apologies for Cross-Posting*
Dear Colleagues,
I am posting the following announcement on behalf of Cristina Dondi, ERC
Research Fellow in the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages and
Oakeshott Senior Research Fellow at Lincoln College, University of Oxford.
Professor Dondi is also the Secretary of CERL (Consortium of European
Research Libraries).
---------------------------
*Printing R-Evolution and Society, 1450-1500. Fifty Years that Changed
Europe*, ed. C. Dondi. Venice: Edizioni Ca’ Foscari Digital Publishing,
2020 (CERL Papers XIV), 978 pp, over 100 colour illustrations.

The volume contains a reassessment of the economic and social impact of the
printing revolution on the development of early modern European society,
using 15th-century printed books, which still survive today in their
thousands, as historical sources. Papers on production, trade, the cost of
books in comparison with the cost of living, literacy, the transmission of
texts in print, and the use and circulation of books and illustration are
the result of several years of international, collaborative, and
multidisciplinary research coordinated by the 15cBOOKTRADE project funded
by an ERC Consolidator grant (2014-2019) and supported by the Consortium of
European Research Libraries.
The proceedings of the conference held in Venice, Palazzo Ducale, 19-21
Sept. 2018.
This is an open access gold publication: as well as freely available in pdf
on the website of Edizioni Ca’ Foscari (Univ. of Venice), paper copies will
be available for purchase.
