The works of local authors have historically been one of my
institution's collecting foci, and we're now reaching the point where
some of their works are appearing only as e-books.
I'm curious whether other curators of local author collections are
encountering this and how it is being handled elsewhere. Has anyone
begun acquiring e-books for special collections? If so, are you
acquiring devices or just files; commercial/proprietary versions from
the publisher or non-interactive PDF versions? What kind of file
management/digital preservation strategies have you put in place?
This is not yet something that we're tackling as part of our
collection development, but I see it rapidly and inevitably
approaching. I'd very much appreciate your perspective on the issue.
Best regards,
Juli

Check out the bibliographies of Greek film in English and in Greek
in the first issue of
FILMICON: Journal of Greek Film Studies ISSUE 1, September 2013
http://filmiconjournal.com/
1] English-Language Bibliography on Greek Cinema (2010-2013)
Olga Kourelou - University of Sussex
The following bibliography consists of critical writing on Greek cinema
published in English since 2010 - a year that marks an upsurge in
interest in Greek film. This interest is partly the result of the
growing visibility of Greek films abroad, brought about by the
remarkable international success of Yorgos Lanthimos's 2009
Kynodontas/Dogtooth.
At the same time, it stems from the general attention Greek culture
and society has been attracting due to the financial crisis. In fact,
these two phenomena, recently produced films and the crisis, have been
inextricably linked in discussions of contemporary Greek cinema, as
several of the entries below testify.
The bibliography has been divided into two main sections.
The first one comprises of academic writing and includes books, essays
in edited collections and journal articles, while the second one is
devoted to film criticism. Given the proliferation of outlets for
criticism, especially on the web (through blogs and online magazines
for instance) and mainly regarding Lanthimos's work, the primary
criterion for the selection of articles has been their critical
insight.
Mostly drawn from broadsheet newspapers, like The Guardian and The New
York Times, and from cinephile film magazines, such as Sight and Sound
and Cineaste, the pieces presented in this section have been chosen
for their influence in framing or expanding certain key current
debates around contemporary Greek cinema (for example, Rosen's piece
on what he calls the "Greek Weird Wave").
The criticism gathered here, however, is not only concerned with Greek
films and the Greek film industry, but also with Greek film studies as
an academic field. Therefore, several reviews of recent publications
on Greek cinema have also been included in the latter part of the
bibliography.
A large amount of the material was gathered using the BFI's database,
FIAF and EBSCOhost Connection. While the bibliography has sought to be
comprehensive, it is nonetheless not exhaustive. As this is a column
that will be continuously updated, however, any omissions that occur
here will be completed in future issues.

Symposium Announcement
"Authenticity"
Rare Book and Special Collections Division
The Library of Congress
December 6, 2013
The Library of Congress announces a symposium on “Authenticity,” a
program that will look at one of the most difficult subjects facing
libraries, private collectors, and booksellers today -- judging the
genuineness of printed materials. The symposium will not focus on
theft or forgery, but rather on the research which curators, scholars,
and conservators have been conducting regarding all elements of
printing and book production. The program will include specialists
who are at the cutting edge of research on printing techniques, paper
manufacture, binding construction, and typography. They will include
scholars, conservators, scientists, and booksellers who are dedicated
to establishing methods for determining authenticity in the field of
rare books, prints, and manuscripts.
The symposium will occupy the entire day and will close with a keynote
address by Michael Suarez (Director, Rare Book School, University of
Virginia).
The Program Schedule:
Panel on Paper
Tim Barret (University of Iowa), Kim Schenck (National Gallery of
Art), Peter Bower (Forensic Paper Historian, London)
Panel on Printing and Typography
Paul Needham (Scheide Librarian, Princeton University), Nick Wilding
(Georgia State University)
Panel on Color
Thomas Primeau (Baltimore Museum of Art), Meg Ford (Christies London),
Lynn Brostoff (The Library of Congress)
The one-day program will be held on Friday, December 6th, 2013 in the
Mumford Room of the Library of Congress' Madison Building. The
program is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. An
RSVP would be appreciated. Please contact Geanie Jackson in the Rare
Book and Special Collections Division at gjackson(a)loc.gov or 202 707
