Last fall my friend Irena Karafilly in Montreal had this book published in
Athens
Psychogios has now developed a very interesting way of publicizing their
books - by posting a trailer on YouTube !
(probably cheaper than print ads <g.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIHViSjYTSQ
Perhaps another neat way for Librarians to keep tabs on new publications
from Greece !
I am always VERY happy indeed to buy from Psychogios - a great contrast to
some other publishers in Athens ... particularly the one that has NOT YET
delivered ANY of the books I chose and paid for when I was there last
September ... despite repeated e-mails, 6.00am phone calls, faxes and
letters (to NONE of which have they had the courtesy to make any reply! )

Call For Proposals: Work-in-Progress seminars, London 2009
Reposted from a variety of places
http://ancientworldbloggers.blogspot.com/2009/02/call-for-proposals-work-in…
Digital Classicist Work-in-Progress Seminars (London, 2009)
Call for Presentations
The Digital Classicist will once more be running a series of
Work-in-Progress seminars in Summer 2009, on the subject of research
into the ancient world that has an innovative digital component. We
are especially interested in work that involves equal collaboration
with a computer scientist or that would be considered serious research
in the Computing field as well as Classics, Archaeology, and/or
Ancient History.
The Work-in-Progress seminars run on Friday afternoons from June
to August in Senate House, London, and are sponsored by the Institute
for Classical Studies (UofL), the Centre for Computing in the
Humanities (KCL), the Centre for e-Research (KCL), and the British
Library. In previous years collected papers from the DC WiP seminars
have been published in a special issue of an online journal (2006),
edited as a printed volume (2007), and released as audio podcasts
(2008); we anticipate similar publication opportunities for future
series.
Please send a 300-500 word abstract to gabriel.bodard(a)kcl.ac.uk by
March 31st 2009. We shall announce the full programme in April.
Best regards,
Gabriel Bodard (CCH)

NEH Grants Available for Preservation Needs Assessments and
Vulnerability Assessments
The Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) is
seeking applicants to participate in its National Endowment for the
Humanities (NEH) grant-funded Preservation Needs Assessment and
Vulnerability Assessment Programs. Through funding from the NEH, CCAHA
is able to offer a limited number of subsidized preservation needs
assessments and vulnerability assessments for $350. The funding also
covers the assessor's travel expenses. Application forms and additional
information about the Preservation Needs Assessment and Vulnerability
Assessment Programs can be found at
http://www.ccaha.org/services/surveys-consultation
Preservation Needs Assessment Grant Awards
This survey is a key first step in developing a preservation plan for
institutions. In addition to pinpointing areas of concern, the
preservation needs assessment is a valuable tool in fundraising. The
preservation needs assessment process encompasses a general evaluation
of the institution's preservation needs for their collection(s):
environment (temperature, relative humidity, pollution and light),
housekeeping, pest control, fire protection, security, and disaster
preparedness; collection storage, handling, exhibition, and treatment;
and preservation planning. The site visit consists of a review of the
site, an examination of the collection(s), and interviews with relevant
staff. The written report provides observations, recommendations, and
resources to serve as a guide in the development of a comprehensive
preservation plan for the collection.
Eligibility: Institutions with paper-based humanities collections that
are available to the public on a regularly scheduled basis and that have
national or regional significance. Additional eligibility requirements
at
http://www.ccaha.org/uploads/media/4e921f9baa53d032ba8a364dc51a7181.pdf
Vulnerability Assessment Grant Awards
A vulnerability assessment is a necessity for developing an Emergency
Preparedness and Response Plan. The surveyor will complete a one day
on-site consultation, analyzing collections management policies and
procedures; facilities and building location; environmental conditions;
security and fire protection; pest and mold control; and weather and
geographic risks. The written vulnerability assessment report will
provide observations, recommendations, and resources to serve as a guide
in the development of an Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan for
the collection and the institution. In addition, CCAHA staff will review
any subsequent disaster planning documents and make suggestions for the
successful implementation of the plan.
Eligibility: Small to mid-sized institutions with humanities-based
collections of regional or national significance in the Mid-Atlantic
region (PA, NJ, DE, MD, NY, DC, VA, and WV). Additional eligibility
requirements at
http://www.ccaha.org/uploads/media/cbc95c88e8907e94b36b16bf76087af1.pdf
Application Process and Deadline:
Application forms and additional information about the Preservation
Needs Assessment and Vulnerability Assessment Programs can be found at
http://www.ccaha.org/services/surveys-consultation
All applications must be postmarked by Tuesday, March 31, 2009.
If you have questions or want to discuss the suitability of these
programs for your institution, please contact CCAHA's Preservation
Services Office, call (215) 545-0613, go to www.ccaha.org
