2019-2020 Hellenic studies Library Research Fellowship Program announcement

Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection Library Research Fellowship Program, 2019-2020 Thanks to generous ongoing funding from the Elios Charitable Foundation and additional funding from the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Foundation, the University Library at California State University, Sacramento is pleased to announce the continuation of the Library Research Fellowship Program to support the use of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection by fellows for scholarly research in Hellenic studies while in residence in Sacramento, CA. The Program provides a limited number of fellowships ranging from $1,000 to $4,000 to help offset transportation and living expenses incurred during the tenure of the awards and is open to external researchers anywhere in the world at the doctoral through senior scholar levels (including independent scholars) working in fields encompassed by the Collection’s strengths who reside outside a 75-mile radius of Sacramento. The term of fellowships can vary between two weeks and three months, depending on the nature of the research, and for the current cycle will be tenable from September 1, 2019-August 31, 2020. The fellowship application deadline is April 30, 2019. No late applications will be considered. Consisting of the holdings of the former Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism, the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection is the premier Hellenic collection in the western United States and one of the largest of its kind in the country, currently numbering approximately 75,000 volumes. It comprises a large circulating book collection, journal holdings, electronic resources, non-print media materials, rare books, archival materials, art and artifacts. With its focus on the Hellenic world, the Collection contains early through contemporary materials across the social sciences and humanities relating to Greece, the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, and the surrounding region, with particular strengths in Byzantine, post-Byzantine, and Modern Greek studies, including the Greek diaspora worldwide. There is a broad representation of over 20 languages in the Collection, with a rich assortment of primary source materials. Since 2009 the collection has experienced particularly dramatic growth through several major gift acquisitions. The tagline was, "The American Voice of Hellenic Expression." A new project under the direction of Nancy Agris Savage, daughter of the Hellenic Chronicle's publisher Peter Agris, has been launched to save the newspaper. Thanks to the Agris family, there is one surviving paper archive at the Archbishop Iakovos Library at Hellenic College Holy Cross in Brookline, MA. The condition of the archive is deteriorating, and just over 25% of the issues from 1950 to 1960 are missing. There is a risk that we will loose this historic record of the Greek Community in America for ever. Please help us to locate the missing issues of the Hellenic Chronicle. We would like to fill in the gaps of the collection at the Archbishop Iakovos Library, and the find the funding to preserve the collection through digitization, and make it available over the public Internet. Speros Vryonis, Jr. Passes away at Age 90

Dear Friends of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection, The University Library at California State University, Sacramento mourns the passing of Prof. Speros Vryonis, Jr., one of the most eminent scholars of Hellenic and Turkish civilizations of the 20th century and the architect of the University Library’s Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection. “It’s easy to marvel at Dr. Vryonis as a towering intellect and prolific scholar, but his accomplishments, as he would tell you, had as much—if not more—to do with hard work and discipline,” notes George I. Paganelis, Curator of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection. Upon the closure of the Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism, Vryonis was instrumental in the decision to bring the center’s library to Sacramento State, where it was renamed in honor of its benefactor and Sacramento State alumnus Angelo K. Tsakopoulos. He also advocated for the creation of a full-time curatorial position to oversee its care and growth in the University Library. “Dr. Vryonis was a consistent supporter of my work to enhance the collection. He was very generous with his time and encouragement, and his praise was the highest compliment I have received in my professional life,” Paganelis adds. Within the educational realm, we see even greater nuances of “open” in terms of how the access to and adapted creation work together. APHA’s 2019 conference, One Press, Many Hands, intends to shed light on the rich history of printing and publishing in America from diverse groups. Generations of past scholars in the field have devoted their research to studies rooted in Eurocentric and Anglo-American histories of printing. However, as the United States becomes increasingly diverse communities of scholarship have sought to engage with issues that have arisen from the transformation in our national demographic makeup. We invite contributions from members of both traditional and emerging communities of scholarship that center on book and printing history, the book arts, bibliographic studies, print culture studies, LGBTQ+ and ethnic studies and the intersections that exist between them. We invite researchers to explore the history of printing among marginalized and underrepresented minority groups through a critical lens. This includes Asian, Black/African American, disability, feminist, immigrant, indigenous, Jewish, Latinx, LGBTQ+, Muslim, refugee, and other communities that collectively help to make up the diverse fabric of American society. The scope is expansive, encompassing any aspect of book/periodical/ephemera production (typography, papermaking, binding, small press, etc.), printing, printmaking, and graphic design based in North America, South America, the Caribbean, or the Pacific Islands. With the conference theme of *Diversity in the History of American Printing*, presenters may consider topics that address the following questions: -What has the press meant for diverse communities across the nation? What contributions have diverse communities made to the history of American printing? -How has the press historically helped reinforce the bonds among diasporic, immigrant, ethnic, refugee, disabled, and LGBTQ+ communities? -How has it worked to build bridges among these diverse communities in terms of forging our shared, national identity?
