Coptic Romanization Table Approved
The ALA-LC Romanization tables are developed jointly by the Library of Congress (LC) and the American Library Association (ALA). Romanization schemes enable the cataloging of foreign language materials. Romanized cataloging in turn supports circulation, acquisitions, serials check-in, shelflisting, shelving, and reference, particularly in library catalogs that are unable to display non-roman alphabet information.
The ALCTS Committee on Cataloging: African and Asian Materials (CC:AAM) recently received and reviewed a proposal for new Coptic romanization table. The table has subsequently been approved.
The Coptic romanization table is now available for downloading from the ALA-LC Romanization Tables webpage<http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html> http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html .
Please direct any questions about romanization tables to Bruce Johnson, Policy and Standards Division (bjoh(a)loc.gov<mailto:bjoh@loc.gov>).

Dear colleagues in CoHSL,
The continued devaluation of the EKEBI as an institution and of its staff is a serious problem. How can we help/offer support through CoHSL (and potentially the MGSA as well)? I recall a petition circulated months ago, but do not see a place for us to show unified (or individual) support/protest, now that the issue is raised again in public. Would the CoHSL leadership wish to mount/submit a collective protest -- in the immediate future?
>From my personal experience in tracking translations of modern Greek literature (for the CENSUS Update) on the website of the EKEBI, and also in the EKEBI's Library in Athens (with Ms. Magda Tsoumi's assistance as librarian), the EKEBI has continuously provided (over at least a decade) unique and excellent information useful towards teaching and research, as well as towards guiding purchases and enhancing library collections connected with Hellenic Studies world-wide.
I hope that this valuable institution will be preserved and supported in pursuing its mission. If CoHSL prepares a letter of protest, please include my signature. Thank you.

Lawrence Durrell's Alexandria House May Be Demolished
http://www.finebooksmagazine.com/fine_books_blog/2014/01/lawrence-durrells-…
BY NATE PEDERSEN ON JANUARY 2, 2014 1:19 AM
Villa Dubron - the Alexandria residence of British expatriate author
Lawrence Durrell - may soon be demolished to make room for a high-rise
apartment complex. Durrell's life at the Villa between 1942 and 1945
inspired his most famous work, The Alexandria Quartet.
Durrell moved to Alexandria in 1942, fleeing Nazi-occupied Greece. At the
time, Alexandria was a cultural mecca, famous for its mix of nationalities,
religions, and artists. Durrell rented the top floor of Villa Dubron from
its owner, the Jewish architect Aldo Ambron. Durrell and his second wife -
herself an Alexandrian and the inspiration for the heroine of The
Alexandria Quartet - lived there for three years before returning to
Britain at the conclusion of WWII. While in residence, Durrell wrote
Prospero's Cell.
Reflecting on his time in Alexandria, Durrell later wrote Justine, the
first volume in The Alexandria Quartet, which was published in 1957.
Balthazar and Mountolive both followed in 1958, while the fourth and final
volume, Clea, was published in 1960.
The Ambron family, meanwhile, sold the villa to a local developer and
businessman in 1966. The developer has since established two apartment
complexes in the former gardens of the villa. While the house is
theoretically protected by a 2006 preservation law that is thinly enforced,
the developer plans to demolish the house anyway unless a conservator can
quickly raise enough money to buy it.
This preservation issue is not a new problem in Alexandria, which has seen
other historic buildings go illegally under the bulldozer in recent years.
A recent movement called Save Alex hopes to preserve as much of
Alexandria's fin-de-siècle heyday as possible.

*Statement of purpose*:
The Consortium of Hellenic Studies Librarians (CoHSL) is a group of
academic research librarians in the United States committed to building and
maintaining collections in Hellenic Studies. The consortium seeks to
promote the sharing of information and collaborative projects that enhance
the depth and scope of the combined collections and to facilitate access to
them.
Five librarians specializing in Hellenic Studies met at Princeton
University in April 2004. At a second meeting at the Harvard University
Center for Hellenic Studies the group had grown to include 10 members. From
this informal gathering a somewhat more organized group was created. The
Consortium of Hellenic Studies Librarians (CoHSL) is a group of academic
research librarians committed to building and maintaining research
collections in Hellenic Studies.
The information available on this site is intended not only for the use of
CoHSL members, but for researchers who may have an interest in learning
about resources in Hellenic Studies at academic research institutions.
There is no membership fee and the consortium is open to library subject
specialists and scholars worldwide. If you wish to join the group, please
contact any of the members of the CoHSL (see Member Institutions).

We met in January 2009 at the APA conference in Philadelphia to discuss the
Collaborative Project for Hellenic Resources (CPHP), a cooperative effort
among the Consortium, the MGSA library committee, CRL, and individual
librarians and publishers in Greece and beyond to establish guidelines on
the use of Greek-language MARC records, indexing of journals, digital
projects, and resource sharing. We usually meet at the APA and/or MGSA
conferences. So far, we have met only once otside the U.S., at the
Gennadius Library in Athens, December 7-10, 2006. Please see Karen

Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection
Library Research Fellowship Program, 2014-2015
Thanks to generous funding from the Elios Society, the University Library at California State University, Sacramento is pleased to announce the third of a three-year Library Research Fellowship Program to support the use of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection by fellows for scholarly research in Hellenic studies while in residence in Sacramento. The Program provides a limited number of fellowships ranging from $500 to $4,000 to help offset transportation and living expenses incurred during the tenure of the awards and is open to external researchers anywhere in the world at the doctoral through senior scholar levels (including independent scholars) working in fields encompassed by the Collection's strengths who reside outside a 150 mile radius of Sacramento. The term of fellowships can vary between one week and three months, depending on the nature of the research, and for the third year will be tenable from July 1, 2014-June 30, 2015. The fellowship application deadline is February 21, 2014. No late applications will be considered.
Consisting of the holdings of the former Speros Basil Vryonis Center for the Study of Hellenism, the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection is the largest Hellenic collection in the western United States and one of the largest of its kind in the country, currently numbering approximately 75,000 volumes. It comprises a large circulating book collection, journal holdings, electronic resources, non-print media materials, rare books, archival materials, art and artifacts. With its focus on the Hellenic world, the Collection contains early through contemporary materials across the social sciences and humanities relating to Greece, the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire and modern Turkey, and the surrounding region, with particular strengths in Byzantine, post-Byzantine, and Modern Greek studies, including the Greek diaspora. There is a broad representation of over 20 languages in the Collection, with a rich assortment of primary source materials. Since 2009 the collection has experienced particularly dramatic growth through two major gift acquisitions totaling more than 5,000 volumes and miscellaneous other gifts totaling another 4,200 volumes. For further information about the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection, visit http://library.csus.edu/tsakopoulos.
