A short story finds new life as a film
http://www.ekathimerini.com/4dcgi/_w_articles_civ_3656857_20/09/2007_88031
An autobiographical short story from Nikos Papandreou's book
"Deka mythoi kai mia istoria" (Ten Myths and a Story) is now a film. The
book was first published in 1995 by Kastaniotis and is now in its 51st
edition. It has been translated into English and German.
Director Olga Malea's film "Proti fora nonos" (First Time Godfather)
is based on the story "Oi Agioi Pantes" (All Saints), where the
California-born eldest son of a political family goes to Crete to act
as godfather to the child of a local party cadre and aspiring
parliamentary deputy. He becomes a godfather for the first time to
show everyone, above all his father, that he is a worthy son. His
foreign appearance and shaky Greek, the local customs and the trials
he undergoes to prove himself all make for a tragicomic scenes with a
political dimension and existential angst.
The film, starring Antonis Kafetzopoulos, Elenis Katsani, Tex Pardue
and Giorgos Kimoulis, premieres October 4.
===================
The story in English "My First Baptism" was included in the books
"The Crowded Heart" Picador USA 1996 (US edition)
" Father Dancing" Viking 1996 (UK Edition)
(Both are available from Kalamos Books)

Dear CoHSL members,
The Modern Greek Studies Association Symposium is about a month away-we hope that you are planning to
attend what should be a very interesting event. http://www.yale.edu/macmillan/hsp/MGSA20.html.
Reminder: the MGSA Library Committee--which includes all CoHSL members who are MGSA members--will
meet on Friday morning, from 9:00-12:00 in classroom 38 of the Beinecke Library. The focus of the meeting
will be the Modern Greek Resources Project, but please let us know if there are other topics you would
like to discuss. Although our meeting is not listed in the preliminary program as it appears on the web site,
we have been assured that is will appear in the final program.
One correction from my message to the list on August 10th-- Maria Georgopoulou's panel is scheduled for
lunch time on Saturday, not Friday as originally announced. This will be an very interesting
presentation and discussion and I hope that you all can attend. Our friends Michalis Tzekakis and Yannis Kosmas will
be presenting. Michalis and Yannis we look forward to seeing you!
Please send a quick message to the list if you are planning to attend, so we can see
which institutions will be represented. To our Greek and British colleagues, we hope you can come, but
understand that the distance might be too great. We would like to plan to meet in 2008 on Greek soil--
(we threw out the possibility of Crete the last time) to continue our discussions.
Other updates:
The Executive Committee is working on the goals, by-laws, etc. and will have drafts for your review at the meeting.
The Gennadius Library publication /New Griffon/ will publish the presentations from our conference.
Shortly after my return from Athens last year I submitted a preliminary report for publication in the 2006 MGSA Bulletin (no. 38).
The publication was sent out in late spring-and appears pages 48-52. Please let me know if you would like an electronic copy.
(The Bulletin is unfortunately not available on line.) If anyone else has published anything on the conference, written any reports about it, please send them
to the list.
As is often the case, we lost some momentum after that energizing meeting in Athens last December.
We tend to return to our institutions and get consumed with our daily work lives and responsibilities
and the "big picture" type things get pushed aside for another day. I hope that we can reignite that
spark at our upcoming meeting, and help to move the Modern Greek Resources Project to the next level.
I hope that you are planning to join us next month--It will be great to reconnect!
Warm regards to all,
Rhea
PS A note to Harry Leich-your message to the list back in August never came through. It appeared with only "Th" and nothing else!

====================
This past week has been spent trying to absorb the devastating daily
news of the appalling destruction in Greece, and wondering how best to
help.
My personal contribution will be a donation to the "Plant your Roots>
in Greece" programme that will plant some trees in memory of my late
husband, Spyros.
However this will create a very small spot of green, that will hardly
show at all in the enormous losses to the Greek landscape.
I also propose to try to raise some additional funds for the same project :
First : to request contributions (any amount welcome, in any currency <g>)
from member s of my mailing list at :
http://groups.google.com/group/HELLAS-GREECE>
There are over 100 subscribers, and just $10.00 each would be enough
to plant a "Grove" of 100 trees in Greece .
(You don't "have" to be a member of it, though, to participate ! <g>)
Secondly : to donate 10% of the profits from all books sold by
Kalamos> Books in September 2007.
Please e-mail me if you would like to join me in this fund-raising effort
