Dear Friends of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection,
I am pleased to announce that the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection has acquired the private library of the late Thanasis Maskaleris, professor of comparative literature and classics at San Francisco State University and founder of the former Center for Modern Greek Studies there. Particularly rich in Modern Greek poetry, this collection consists of ca. 3,000 volumes of books, journals, and magazines; approximately 100 audiovisual recordings; and approximately nine linear feet of Maskaleris’ writings, notes, and related materials. Following Maskaleris’ death in 2017, the Modern Greek Studies Foundation (MGSF) acquired the material from Maskaleris’ son Dionysos; in September 2022 MGSF in turn donated the collection to Sacramento State for the enhancement of the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection.
“The Modern Greek Studies Foundation was honored to be entrusted with the expansive library collection of the late Professor Thanasis Maskaleris, founding Director of the Center for Modern Greek Studies at San Francisco State University,” said Chris Gus Kanios, President of the Modern Greek Studies Foundation. “We are now honored to gift this entire collection to the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection, where it will receive the trustworthy and professional curation it deserves and will serve as a testament to the dedication of Professor Maskaleris in promoting Hellenic culture and values.”
For more information on the Maskaleris collection, please visit: https://library.csus.edu/tsakopoulos-hellenic-collection/maskaleris.
Cataloging of the book collection is ongoing, and the archival material is currently being processed and will be physically accessible in the near future. If you would like to contribute funds to help pay for the digitization of select materials from the collection, please visit https://securelb.imodules.com/s/1894/19/home-hero.aspx?sid=1894&gid=2&pgid=…. Under Designations, click “View all giving options” and select Hellenic Book Fund under University Library; then, under Gift Instructions type Maskaleris Collection Digitization.
We are again extremely grateful and honored that MGSF selected the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection as the new home of this rich collection.
Best,
George I. Paganelis
