British Library - Free Bibliographic records
The British Library is to make its extensive collections of bibliographic
records available for free to researchers and other libraries:
www.bl.uk/bibliographic/datafree.html
The UK national library has around 14 million catalogue records comprising a
wealth of bibliographic data. The initiative announced today will help
expose this vast dataset to users worldwide, allowing researchers and other
libraries to access and retrieve bibliographic records for publications
dating back centuries and relating to every conceivable subject area.
The new free service will operate in parallel to the British Library's
priced bulk MARC data supply activity which is used extensively by large
commercial customers.
By making the British Library's bibliographic data available in new ways for
wider, non-commercial use we want to encourage users beyond the traditional
library world to explore and use this important international resource, said
Neil Wilson, the British Library's Head of Metadata Services. For libraries,
free access to these records will help reduce the effort involved in
cataloguing their holdings. For the wider research community, they are a
valuable source of data to help advance knowledge.
In some instances researchers may use the Library's records for purposes
very different from those for which they were originally created. The
Library recently provided the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) with some
eight million bibliographic records allowing the IPO to conduct research
into publishing trends dating as far back as 1650, and to plot these
patterns against the course of changes in IP legislation.
We believe this vast dataset of bibliographic records created and compiled
by the British Library over many decades has a range of applications far
beyond its original purpose, its going to be exciting to find out the new
uses that organisations and individuals can make of this data added Neil
Wilson. As developments such as the semantic web create new and more
effective opportunities for researchers to find, manipulate and link
information, the availability of good quality data from a trusted source
such as the British Library will become increasingly important.

Indiana University Bloomington
Herman B Wells Library, Room E174
1320 E. 10th Street
Bloomington, Indiana, 47405
This workshop is intended for rare materials catalogers with little or no
familiarity with Latin. The workshop will provide tools for navigating the
title page, identifying the key verbs and inflected forms of nouns for
persons, places, and things, in order to accurately record title and
remainder of title information, author(s) and other names, editions,
publication information, and privilege statements (i.e. DCRM(B)/AACR2
descriptive areas 1, 2, and 4), and any related notes. Among the issues
addressed will be identifying and expanding contracted forms, Latin
terminology used for illustrations and publishing, and other issues unique
to Latin materials.

China, Greece ink agreement on cultural exchange
English.news.cn 2010-08-31 22:46:48
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/china/2010-08/31/c_13471919.htm
BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Greek and Chinese authors and publishing
houses here Tuesday
signed a cultural exchange agreement to promote book publications in
both languages.
Two children's books will be published according to the agreement.
One is written by a Greek author and illustrated by a Chinese
illustrator. The other is written by a
Chinese author and illustrated by a Greek illustrator. The two books
will be published simultaneously
in Greece and China.
Giorgos Poussaios, general secretary for Tourism of Greece, said
Greece hopes to enhance cooperation
in culture, tourism and other areas of common interest with China. He
hailed the cultural exchange
agreement as an important step towards the goal.
"We hope that through the books and our presence at the Shanghai Expo,
Chinese people will
learn more about Greek culture," Poussaios said.
"We welcome all Chinese to visit Greece," he added.
Sun Shoushan, deputy head of the General Administration of Press and
Publication, said the
agreement underlies the cultural exchange between the two ancient
civilizations.
The agreement is part of China's national reading program, which
introduces foreign books to Chinese children, parents and teachers.
The two countries have intensified cultural exchange in literature in
recent years.
As guest of honor, China attended the 7th Thessaloniki Book Fair, a
major book event in Greece,
in 2010 while Greece participated in the Beijing International Book
Fair in 2008 as the guest of honour

The rare materials cataloging community would like to get opinions from
others who look up early printed books in library catalogs. This query
has specifically to do with the representation of pagination
* New general cataloging rules for the entire English-speaking
world have just been issued, called RDA (Resource Description and
Access).
* The current (and presumably, future) rare book cataloging rules,
which are based on standard general cataloging rules, have as one of its
principles that we won't depart from general cataloging rules unless
there's a "rare book reason" to do so.
* One of RDA's principles is to get rid of abbreviations
throughout the cataloging record, and to use square brackets solely for
information supplied by the cataloger. Therefore, the pagination of a
normal modern book might appear in an online catalog as:
Physical description: xvii, 605 pages
* A normal early printed book, for which cataloging principles
require accounting for every single page in the text block, will have
unnumbered pages that need to be accounted for. So, as in Helen's note,
what you would now see in a library catalog as
Physical description: [12], 72, [10], 48, [6], 228, [16] p.
Would instead appear as
Physical description: 12 unnumbered pages, 72 pages, 10 unnumbered
pages, 48 pages, 6 unnumbered pages, 228 pages, 16 unnumbered pages
* That is to say, it would show up that new way if the
Anglo-American cataloging community decide that the next time the rare
book cataloging rules (DCRM(B)) are revised, there is no "rare book
reason" to depart from RDA regarding the recording of pagination
* There are fairly strong opinions among catalogers, but we want
to hear from the non-librarians who use our catalog records.
