Western Archival Network grant is underway

Willard Marriott Library at the University of Utah on behalf of three consortia: (a) Utah Academic Library Consortium’s Mountain West Digital Library, (b) Orbis Cascade Alliance’s Northwest Digital Archives, and (c) Rocky Mountain Online Archive, hosted by the University of New Mexico. Objective This collaborative planning grant is a one-year project Planning for a Western Archival Network: Administrative, Technical, and End User Concerns. The three consortia on the grant are currently exploring ways to improve user access to Encoded Archival Description (EAD) finding aids describing the archival materials in our three Western regions, possibly via a central “Western EAD search portal.” Fifteen staff members representing the three consortia met in Albuquerque in January to examine ways to create better user experiences and realize cost efficiencies through shared standards, technology and administration. Follow up meetings are planned in Salt Lake City, UT in April and Portland, OR in September. Impact This project will have national impact for both end users, and the EAD community at large. Once the planning is completed and the methods implemented, end users will have easier and quicker access to both a greater volume and diversity of archival materials. The intent is to provide a model that other organizations can implement so that consortia across the country benefit from reduced costs and increased access to collections. Dr. Gregory Thompson, Associate Dean for Special Collections at the Marriott Library, and principal investigator on the grant states: “We are extremely excited about how this grant will open the doors to incredible collections across the west… In the long-term, citizens everywhere will encounter easier and faster online access to historical photographs, manuscripts, oral histories, and many other rare and historic materials.” Outcomes Based on the grant activities, final recommendations and a report will be released in October 2012. The three consortia hope to pursue additional collaborative funding for the implementation phase of the project. UALC partners cooperate in continually improving the availability and delivery of library and information services to the higher education community and to the State of Utah, through fostering research, developing and implementing cooperative library programs; providing a means for the exchange of information on cooperative library ventures; maximizing limited resources by improving library methods and avoiding expensive duplicate purchases; maximizing information delivery through shared use of technology and human resources; and acting as an advocate for excellence in library resources and services. One of the flagship programs of the UALC is the Mountain West Digital Library (http://mwdl.org), a free search portal to 350 digital collections containing over 650,000 resources about the Mountain West region from 62 partnering libraries, archives, and other cultural heritage institutions. Αρ. Δοξιάδης σχετικά με τη δωρεά βιβλίων: Τα βιβλία της βιβλιοθήκης του Σπύρου Δοξιάδη τα πήρε η βιβλιοθήκη της Εθνικής Σχολής Δημόσιας Υγείας. Μέσα σε δύο μέρες από το προηγούμενο ποστ μου, είχαμε συνεννοηθεί, και σήμερα τα παρέδωσα. Σύνολο, τέσσερις μέρες. Είμαι ευτυχής που κατέληξαν εκεί. Η θεματολογία της συλλογής του Σπύρου Δοξιάδη είναι κυρίως για την ιστορία της ιατρικής, τις σχέσεις με την κοινωνία, την εκπαίδευση και την οργάνωση υπηρεσιών υγείας, ενώ περιέχει λίγα εγχειρίδια κλινικής πρακτικής. Συνεπώς, η ΕΣΔΥ είναι φυσικός χώρος για αυτήν. Επιπρόσθετα, ο Σπύρος Δοξιάδης είχε ασχοληθεί πολύ όταν ήταν Υπουργός Υγείας με τον εκσυγχρονισμό της Σχολής. Ο δε πατέρας του, Απόστολος Δοξιάδης, ήταν ο Υπουργός που ίδρυσε την Σχολή με την αρχική της μορφή ως Υγειονομική Σχολή Αθηνών το 1929. Συνεπώς, τέλος καλό, όλα καλά. Μέσα στις τέσσερις μέρες πήρα περίπου πενήντα μηνύματα σχετικά με το θέμα. Επτά ή οκτώ ήταν από βιβλιοθήκες Σχολών, Νοσοκομείων και ΟΤΑ. Σε μερικά από αυτά, ενώ υπήρχε ενδιαφέρον να πάρουν τη συλλογή, διαφαινόταν και η γραφειοκρατική δυστοκία που ματαίωσε και την προ δύο ετών προσπάθεια μας να δώσουμε τα βιβλία στην Ιατρική Σχολή Αθηνών. Αλλες βιβλιοθήκες φαίνονταν έτοιμες να παραλάβουν σε δυό ή τρεις εβδομάδες, χρόνος που μου φαίνεται λογικός. Αλλά η ΕΣΔΥ ήταν μια καλή λύση, για τους λόγους που εξήγησα. Ζητάω κατανόηση από τους γιατρούς και δασκάλους των άλλων ιδρυμάτων που δεν προτίμησα τις δικές τους προτάσεις, και τους ευχαριστώ για το ενδιαφέρον. Υπήρξαν και πολλοί ιδιώτες (γιατροί ή φοιτητές) που ζήτησαν μερικά ή όλα τα βιβλία. Implementation of Apostrophes in Japanese Romanized Cataloging and Proposed Revision of the ALA-LC Japanese Romanization Table The Library of Congress recently announced its interest in clarifying the use of apostrophes in romanized Japanese cataloging. Comments about the announcement were overwhelmingly in favor of using the apostrophe rather than the alif. Based on this feedback, the Library of Congress will immediately align the use of the apostrophe in Japanese romanized cataloging with the published ALA-LC Japanese romanization standard. LC will also update headings in its bibliographic and authorities databases to reflect this decision. PCC member institutions are asked to adjust Japanese romanized cataloging records accordingly as they are encountered. The announcement about apostrophe use in Japanese romanized cataloging revealed that additional revisions to the Japanese ALA-LC romanization table were needed. Κυριακή, 18 Μαρτίου 2012 Θεμα: Προσφέρoνται βιβλία από τη βιβλιοθήκη του Σπύρου Δοξιάδη Επειδή μπορεί να γνωρίζετε κάποιο ίδρυμα ή συνάδελφο που να ενδιαφέρεται, παραθέτω την παρακάτω ανακοίνωση από τον κ. Αριστο Δοξιάδη: Προσφέρω βιβλία από τη βιβλιοθήκη του Σπύρου Δοξιάδη Μην έχοντας καταφέρει να δώσουμε τα βιβλία της βιβλιοθήκης του πατέρα μας στην Ιατρική Σχολή, αποφασίσαμε να τα δώσουμε σε όποιον τα θέλει. Ο πατέρας μας ήταν ο Σπύρος Δοξιάδης (1917-1991), εξαιρετικός παιδίατρος, ερευνητής της παιδικής ηλικίας, διαμορφωτής υπηρεσιών υγείας, και Υπουργός Υγείας. Στην προσωπική του βιβλιοθήκη στο σπίτι είχε, μεταξύ πολλών άλλων και περίπου 350 βιβλία με ιατρική θεματολογία: ιστορία και κοινωνιολογία της ιατρικής, οργάνωση υπηρεσιών υγείας αλλά και εγχειρίδια κλινικής πρακτικής. Τα περισσότερα είναι στα αγγλικά, αλλά υπάρχουν πολλά ελληνικά, μερικά γαλλικά και γερμανικά. Οι χρονολογίες έκδοσης των περισσοτέρων είναι από το 1960 ως το 1990. Τα βιβλία αυτά προσπαθήσαμε με τα αδέλφια μου να τα δωρίσουμε στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Παν. Αθηνών, αλλά για λόγους που μου είναι τελείως ακατανόητοι, δεν τα καταφέραμε. (Ευτυχώς, το Τμήμα Εκπαίδευσης και Αγωγής στην Προσχολική Ηλικία πήρε άλλα τόσα βιβλία που είχαν σχετική με το αντικείμενο τους θεματολογία). Θα θέλαμε να τα δόσουμε σε όποιον ενδιαφέρεται να τα φυλάξει, να τα μελετήσει, ή ακόμα καλύτερα να τα βάλει σε μια βιβλιοθήκη προσβάσιμη σε μελετητές ή σε φοιτητές. The preservation needs assessment process encompasses a general evaluation of the institution's preservation needs for their collections and includes: environment (temperature, relative humidity, pollution and light), housekeeping, pest control, fire protection, security, and disaster preparedness; collection storage, handling, exhibition, and treatment; and preservation planning. The site visit consists of a review of the site, an examination of the collections, and interviews with relevant staff. The written report provides observations, recommendations, and resources to serve as a guide in the development of a comprehensive preservation plan for the collections. In addition to pinpointing areas of concern, the preservation needs assessment is also a valuable fundraising tool. Eligibility: Institutions with paper-based humanities collections that are available to the public on a regularly scheduled basis and that have national or regional significance are encouraged to apply. Institutions selected to participate in the program will work with a CCAHA staff member to complete a one day on-site consultation during which collections management policies and procedures, facilities and building location, environmental conditions, security and fire protection, pest and mold control, and weather and geographic risks are analyzed. The written risk assessment report will provide observations, recommendations, and resources to help the institution mitigate risks and will also serve as a guide in the development of an Emergency Preparedness and Response Plan for the collection and the institution. In addition, CCAHA staff will review any subsequent disaster planning documents and make suggestions for the successful implementation of the emergency plan. Eligibility: Small to mid-sized institutions with humanities-based collections of regional or national significance in the Mid-Atlantic region (PA, NJ, DE, MD, NY, DC, VA, and WV) are eligible and encouraged to apply. Mar. 6, 2012 FILMMAKER STAVROULA TOSKA VISITS THE TSAKOPOULOS HELLENIC COLLECTION Actress, filmmaker, and co-founder of Orama Pictures Stavroula Toska visited the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection from Feb. 16-21 to conduct research on her current documentary film project, tentatively titled Three Candles. The film, narrated by Academy Award winner Olympia Dukakis, chronicles the story of Greek women who were exiled into concentration camps from 1946-1949 during the Greek Civil War. Several notebooks of these women have been discovered and reveal both the atrocities they endured at the hands of the government as well as their inner lives during their internment. During her stay Toska made use of the Collection’s extensive holdings on Greece during World War II and the ensuing Greek Civil War, including newspapers and pamphlets of the period and additional materials contained in the Vlavianos archive. "I am so grateful for all the help and support I received during my visit to the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection. I never thought I'd be reading original newspapers and pamphlets from the 1940s about World War II and the Greek Civil War, as well as other scarce books that have been out of print for so many years. The information I was able to gather for our documentary feature surpassed all expectations and was simply priceless," Toska said. The film is currently in post production and is scheduled to screen at domestic and international film festivals in 2013.
