Maria Georgopoulou has been Director of the Gennadius Library at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens since 2004. Before that, she was Associate Professor of the History of Art at Yale University, where she also founded the Hellenic Studies Program. A native of Greece, she was educated at the University of Athens, the Sorbonne and UCLA, where she received her Ph.D. in 1992. Her research focuses on the interaction of artistic cultures in the Medieval Mediterranean. Her published works include the book Venice's Mediterranean Colonies: Architecture and Urbanism (Cambridge University Press, 2001) and numerous articles on crusader art as well as material culture and trade. Dr. Georgopoulou has received many honors and awards, including a New Directions Fellowship from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, a Getty Postdoctoral Fellowship, a Dumbarton Oaks Junior Fellowship in Byzantine Studies, and a Fulbright Grant. She is an active member of College Art Association, the Archaeological Institute of America, the Modern Greek Studies Association, the International Center for Medieval Art, and the Consortium of Hellenic Studies Librarians. She is currently spending her sabbatical year on academic leave at the National Humanities Center in North Carolina, writing a book on trade and the arts in the medieval Mediterranean.
