It is not just the losses in current year acquisitions, but collection gaps in the long term that may be problematic. When I was at Library school in Manchester in the 1960s I remember a discussion about the effects of the Great Depression on libraries. As disposable income disappeared there was a surge in public demand. Acquisitions in some areas were more or less abandoned. Poetry was one subject deemed rather less essential at the time, and a librarian in special collections remarked that they were still trying to plug the gaps left by that decade of missing titles. .
