Dear colleague,
The Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien invites scholars
to apply for seven postdoctoral fellowships for the research project
RECHTSKULTUREN: CONFRONTATIONS BEYOND COMPARISON
for the academic year 2011/12 in Berlin.
Please find the call for applications below, or as a PDF document
attached to this message or via the following link:
http://www.forum-transregionale-studien.de/fileadmin/pdf/rechtskulturen/pdf…
I kindly ask you to spread the information about the fellowships
among scholars interested in contextual and contextualized legal
knowledge. We intend to create a space of reflection and communication
where the law and its context(s) can be re-negotiated from
a variety of disciplinary and regional perspectives, and
re-connected with jurisprudence and legal methodology.
The Forum Transregionale Studien is a new research platform
of the Land of Berlin designed to promote research connecting
systematic and region-specific questions in a perspective that
addresses entanglements and interactions beyond national, cultural
or regional frames. The Forum works in tandem with established
institutions and networks engaged in transregional studies and
is supported by an association of the directors of research
institutes and networks mainly based in Berlin. It started its
activities in 2010 by supporting three research projects in the
fields of law, philology, and urban sociology.
The Forum Transregionale Studien is funded by the Senate of Berlin.
For more information, please see our website (under construction)

P.S. Apologies for double postings.
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
SEVEN POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2011/2012
The Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien invites scholars
to apply for seven postdoctoral fellowships for the research project
RECHTSKULTUREN: CONFRONTATIONS BEYOND COMPARISON
CANDIDATES
Applicants should be at the postdoctoral level and should have
obtained their doctorate within the last five years before their
application to the program. We welcome candidates in particular
from the disciplines of law, sociology, political science,
philosophy, history, anthropology, theology, and area studies,
representing a broad range of diverse approaches to the law,
including gender studies, comparative research, law& literature,
critical approaches to international law, administrative sciences,
transitional justice, the law of development cooperation, and
classical problems of legal philosophy. We encourage and welcome
applications from all regions of the world. Fellows are given
the opportunity to pursue their individual research projects within
a transdisciplinary and transregional context. During the fellowship
in Berlin, they will be associated with a university institute
(e.g. the Faculty of Law at Humboldt-Universitaet) or an extra-
university research institute. In the overall context of the
project Rechtskulturen and the framework of the Forum Transregionale
Studien, they will be part of a vibrant discursive environment.
FELLOWSHIPS
begin on October 1, 2011, and will end on July 31, 2012. Shorter
fellowship terms can be considered. Postdoctoral fellows will
receive a monthly stipend of Euro 2.250 plus supplements depending
on their personal situation. Organisational support, regarding
visa, insurances, housing, etc. will be provided. Successful
applicants will be fellows of the project Rechtskulturen at
the Forum Transregionale Studien.
THE PROGRAM
The postdoctoral fellow program Rechtskulturen ('legal cultures')
is designed to explore the law in new and innovative ways. We
intend to create a space of reflection and communication where
fundamental and salient questions of the law and its context(s)
can be re-negotiated from a variety of disciplinary and regional
perspectives, and re-connected with jurisprudence and legal
methodology. As a central element of the Berlin research network
Law in Context based at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin,
Rechtskulturen aims at recontextualizing our understanding of
law by transcending the scope of comparative legal studies and
international law. It is designed to enhance a re-location of law
among its neighboring disciplines - the humanities, the cultural
and social sciences -, and can thus allow affiliated scholars,
fellows and faculty to develop innovative research agendas in
transregional constellations beyond a European or Anglo-American
focus. The program addresses scholars from a variety of disciplinary
backgrounds, regional contexts and academic fields of discourse.
In Berlin, the postdoctoral fellows will work on projects of
their own choice.
The program Rechtskulturen is co-directed by
Justice-elect Professor Susanne Baer (Bundesverfassungsgericht/
Humboldt-Universitaet) and
Professor Christoph Moellers (Humboldt-Universitaet),
and scientifically coordinated by
Alexandra Kemmerer (Research Network Law in Context, Wissenschafts-
kolleg zu Berlin).
Each academic year, the program invites seven scholars in an
early stage of their academic careers to Berlin to pursue projects
contributing to the study of Rechtskulturen: Confrontations Beyond
Comparison. The fellow program's scholarly environment is designed
to enable and to encourage both fellows and the wider community to
explore and create new orientations in their interdisciplinary
research projects.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
To apply, please send the following documents in English, exclusively
by e-mail, as separate word or PDF files:
- a curriculum vitae
- an anonymized project description (no longer than five pages)
stating what you will work on in Berlin if granted a fellowship
- the titles of three pieces of your scholarly work (incl. biblio-
graphical information) and your favourite one of those as PDF file
- the names and addresses (incl. e-mail) of two referees
The application, to be received by 17 January 2011, should be
addressed to:
rechtskulturen(a)trafo-berlin.de

The L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at VCU is in the process of recruiting for 8 tenure-track or tenured positions to start in Fall of 2011. These positions are not specifically designated for any one program, but are open to all disciplines in the
school.
The Sociology program in the School includes both B.S. and M.S. programs.
Currently, we have 200+ undergraduate majors and 20+ graduate students. The faculty has expertise in multiple research methodologies including demography, social network analysis, quantitative and qualitative methods. Both the graduate and undergraduate programs are grounded in a
strong theoretical foundation in social structural bases and processes of social inequality around social class, race, and gender. The M.S. program has two tracks--thesis and applied.
Here is the official position announcement.
TEN TENURE-TRACK OR TENURED FACULTY POSITIONS
The L. Douglas Wilder School at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) will be filling 10 or more tenure-track or tenured positions in the coming two years. As part of this major recruitment we are inviting applications and letters of interest for 8 positions to begin in Fall 2011, contingent upon funding. The appointments are broadly structured and can potentially contribute to any of our fields. Applicants are encouraged to clearly identify the fields closest to their research and teaching.
Our largest programs at the graduate level are professionally oriented master's degree programs in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Urban and Regional Planning, and a Ph.D. program in Public Policy. We are particularly interested in candidates who identify with one or more of these areas. The disciplinary training of applicants can be in any of the above fields or in the social sciences, especially Political Science and Sociology (where we have undergraduate and graduate programs). The ability to contribute to research and teaching in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness will be an added advantage. A Ph.D. degree or equivalent by the time of hiring and potential for high quality scholarship and teaching is required for allpositions. Senior scholars must have a distinguished record of
research, teaching, and service and those with documented ability to secure external research funding will be preferred. Junior faculty must have the potential for external funding and a strong research agenda. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required.
Faculty research interests in the Wilder School include sustainable urban development, geospatial planning and technological applications, state and local government, social equity, gender, health policy, policing, corrections, crime prevention, comparative international development, political institutions, security studies, and the study of disasters and genocide.
We are currently part of the College of Humanities and Sciences, the largest College at VCU. Planning is underway to give the Wilder School free-standing status as one of the Colleges and Schools at VCU under our Provost. While most of our appointments will be at junior ranks, senior scholars are welcome to apply. We are particularly interested in senior scholars who lead research groups who might want to explore the possibility of joining us. We envisage that such groups will be led by a tenured colleague and will include one or more junior colleagues. Under VCU's new President and under new leadership in the Wilder School we are committed to providing a research rich environment for our new colleagues. Senior scholars are invited to contact Dr. John Accordino (jaccordi(a)vcu.edu), Chair of the Search Committee, or Dr. Niraj Verma, Director of the Wilder School (nverma2(a)vcu.edu).
Altogether the Wilder School has 2500 students and an alumni base of over 11,000 making it the largest group with the College of Humanities and Sciences. We have nearly 100 full-time faculty and researchers who are housed in the School and in its research and consulting units, including the Survey and Evaluation Research Laboratory, Performance Management Group, Transportation Safety and Training Center, Urban Development Group, and the Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute. Together, the School's research and contract volume exceeds $8 million annually.
Named after the Honorable L. Douglas Wilder, former Governor of Virginia and the first elected African-American Governor in the United States and now a Distinguished Professor in the School, the Wilder School is and wants to be a School where competing perspectives thrive and where a common interest in the betterment of society knits these perspectives together. Richmond, the capital of Virginia, provides extraordinary opportunities for those interested in governance in all its meanings, including the study of government at local and state levels. Washington, D.C., which is a two hour drive away, provides additional national and international opportunities for our students and faculty.
Applications for these positions should be submitted via email and should include a cover-letter and a detailed CV including names of three references, one sample of scholarship, and evidence of teaching effectiveness to Mrs. Tina Braden
at tbraden(a)vcu.edu. Review of applications will begin on December 1 and continue until positions are filled. References will not be contacted without checking with the candidates. For more information about our programs please visit our website at www.pubapps.vcu.edu/gov/
