Dear Graduate Directors,
The Sociology Department at Florida Atlantic University has advertised four faculty positions to begin in August 2018. Three of these are tenure-track Assistant Professor positions with 3/2 teaching load while the fourth is an Instructor position with a 4/4 teaching load. We have had ads in the ASA job bank for the three tenure-track positions for about three weeks, indicating that we will "begin reviewing immediately and continue until the position is filled." The areas for which we have advertised are the following:
1. Assistant Professor with a specialization in globalization, global inequalities, human rights, and/or Latin America.
2. Assistant Professor with a specialization in social class or racial inequalities and quantitative research methods. (We are looking for a candidate that regularly uses quantitative methods in their research and who would be capable of teaching quantitative research methods at both the undergraduate and MA level).
3. Assistant Professor with a specialization in health and aging.
Since the ad did not offer a specific deadline for submission, I wanted to share with you our projected timetable so that you might pass this along to your graduate students on the job market this year. On Friday, we met and identified a short list of candidates for the three tenure-track positions with whom we will be conducting Skype interviews. Our pools of applicants, however, were much smaller than we have ever had in the past and so we hope to receive more applications in the next two weeks before we meet again on March 2nd to select additional candidates to add to our short lists for Skype interviews. If you have graduate students interested in any of these positions who have not yet submitted their applications, it is very important that they submit their applications ASAP. Any applications that come in by March 1st will get full consideration.
If any of your graduate students on the market might be interested in a full-time instructor position, we anticipate that our hiring for this position will be a bit later than our three tenure track positions. So please pass the word on about this position, as we have not advertised it in the ASA job bank.
Our starting salary is $60,000 for the tenure-track positions and $40,000 for the instructor position. Despite the salaries, there is really much to like about the Sociology Department at Florida Atlantic University. The teaching load of 3/2 is unusually light for a regional university, and we are in an exciting phase of development of our programs and department as we have begun to replace retiring faculty with a new energetic group of assistant professors. Our curriculum is highly flexible, so faculty can pretty much self-select their rotation of courses, creating as many new course titles as they would want to teach if our existing courses do not perfectly match their interests. We have a reduced teaching load of 2/2 during the 1st or 2nd year and again during the 4th or 5th year, and there are also opportunities to get internal fellowships to allow faculty a semester off of teaching to focus exclusively on research. Faculty typically are given the opportunity to teach one or more 6-week courses in the summer at a rate of 1/8 of 9-month salary for the first course and $5200 for the second. We also have a highly collegial faculty; we reach decisions by consensus and get along well with one another. Although I cannot say for sure since I have never had a faculty position anywhere but here, I would imagine that we are somewhat distinctive in this regard.
We will give full consideration to all ABD candidates, with the expectation that the Ph.D. would be in hand by August 2018.
Thank you for reading this email and passing it along to your graduate students on the job market. If you are not your department's current graduate director, would you please pass this on to the person on your faculty currently in this position.
Best regards,
Ann

ANDREA MITCHELL CENTER "DEMOCRACY IN TROUBLE?" POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP 2018-2019
CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
2018-2019 Academic Year
Application Deadline: February 18, 2018
Apply through Interfolio at https://apply.interfolio.com/47844<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__apply.interfolio.com_4…>
The University of Pennsylvania's Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in any discipline whose research is pertinent to the theme of the Center's 2018-2019 faculty workshop series, "Democracy in Trouble?" In addition to pursuing independent research, the postdoctoral fellow is expected to attend monthly workshops connected to the faculty series and contribute to the events' lively discussions; teach one undergraduate course related to their academic interests; co-lead a research seminar for Mitchell Center undergraduate fellows; and attend other Mitchell events whenever possible.
The stipend is $53,800 plus benefits, including health insurance.
The "Democracy in Trouble?" theme year grows from a growing sense that democratic governance is under siege around the world. New democracies such as Poland and Hungary are reverting to authoritarian practices. Voters throughout the West - and elsewhere - have shown a willingness to jettison democratic institutions and norms to pursue the narrow interests of national, linguistic, or religious groups. Commitment to democracy has waned in particular among young people. The United States and other countries have witnessed demagogic attacks on the media, the courts, and an array of perceived internal enemies. "Democracy in Trouble?" seeks to both examine and counter these trends with wide-ranging discussions that reach our entire campus community and beyond.
The faculty series will consist of two conferences that bookend the academic year. The first will provide a frank appraisal of democracy's current challenges. The second will focus on strategies of resistance to authoritarian rule. In a series of faculty seminars throughout the year we will host public discussions led by engaged faculty on tough issues around democracy: how the media can better serve it; whether economic reforms are necessary to bolster it; whether immigration challenges it; how authoritarian regimes like Russia seek to undermine it; how voter suppression affects its operation; and more.
Global in its outlook, multifaceted in its purposes, the Andrea Mitchell Center for the Study of Democracy seeks to contribute to the ongoing quest for democratic values, ideas, and institutions throughout the world. In addition to hosting speakers from the fields of academia, journalism, politics, and public policy, the Mitchell Center supports undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral research. It continues the legacy of the Penn Program for Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism, which fostered interdisciplinary scholarship from 2007 to 2017.
