FYI!
My department has several job openings this year that the students on the market may be interested in applying. One in criminology and policy, one in gender and/or family.
In particular, I would like to call your attention to one that I am especially excited about: an open rank position in areas related to African American life and culture. Attached is the announcement, also pasted below.
I would be excited to hear from you about any of your students on the market this year who might be a good fit.
****
Assistant/Associate/Professor of Sociology
The Department of Sociology and Criminology at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park campus, invites applications for a tenure-line position to begin August 2019. Junior candidates should show significant research and teaching promise and must complete their Ph.D. by the time of appointment. We encourage applications from women and underrepresented minorities. Information regarding the department can be found at: http://sociology.la.psu.edu/. Hi, all!
Will you be on the academic job market this year? Are you planning to apply for upcoming fellowship competitions? If so, please review the information below, which contains the current process for requesting letters of recommendation from Sociology faculty.
Faculty Assistants will use Harvard's Google Apps to share application lists and collect supporting materials from students. By sharing documents via Google, you and the Faculty Assistants will share ownership of materials, resulting in the most up-to-date information being available to all parties.
If you will be requesting letters of recommendation, please follow the steps below:
1. E-mail the faculty member(s) from whom you are requesting letters, alerting them that you are applying for a fellowship or are planning to go on-the-market.
2. Copy the faculty assistant(s) on the e-mail(s). Using Google Drive, the faculty assistant(s) will share with you a standard application list template to complete.
3. To create a Harvard-affiliated Google account, sign up at g.harvard.edu.
4. Fill out the application list template, noting all fellowships and/or positions to which you are applying. You can continue to update the list on Google Drive as new positions are posted.
5. Share with the faculty assistant(s) all pertinent materials (CV, Writing Sample, Research or Teaching Statement, articles or chapters, transcripts, etc.) that faculty may reference as they write your letters.
As letters are sent/submitted, Faculty Assistants will mark them as sent on the application spreadsheet, providing you with up-to-date information regarding the status of letters.
Please contact your faculty and their assistant(s) by September 1 if you know that you will be requesting letters this fall (e.g., all job market candidates and all NSF GRFP/NSF DDIG applicants).
Faculty Assistants are listed below, along with their current faculty assignments and e-mail addresses. Please note that there have been some recent changes in these assignments.
* Emily Briand (Bobo, Sampson): eebriand(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:eebriand@fas.harvard.edu>
* Genevieve Butler (Beckfield, Viterna, Winship): gbutler(a)g.harvard.edu<mailto:gbutler@g.harvard.edu>
* Deb De Laurell (Bonikowski, Chang, Ellis, Legewie, Lei, Marsden): deborahd(a)wjh.harvard.edu<mailto:deborahd@wjh.harvard.edu>
* Laura Kistler (Brinton, Dobbin, Patterson, Waters): lkistler(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:lkistler@fas.harvard.edu>
* Lisa Albert (Killewald, Lamont, Pager, Small): lalbert(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:lalbert@fas.harvard.edu>
Please give your faculty as much advance notice as possible when requesting recommendation letters. If you are approaching a faculty member for a letter for the first time, it is helpful to give a minimum of one month's notice to provide time to prepare an effective letter.
We hope that these procedures will improve the recommendation letter process and reduce the burden on students, faculty, and staff.
As always, I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.
Best,
Jessica
