Subject: Tenure Track Position at Kenyon College
Dear Colleague,
I hope this brief missive finds you well. I write as chair of Kenyon’s search committee for a tenure track appointment beginning in fall 2016. I hope to enlist your support by having you encourage your current graduate students who expect to complete their terminal degrees by next summer or recent graduates who are looking to teach at one of the nation’s best small liberal arts colleges to consider applying. We are seeking to hire a new colleague whose scholarship and teaching experience are in Sociology of Education or Environmental Sociology.
Whether you choose to speak with one or more graduates of your institution who have taught at Kenyon over the years or know someone who has spent a year or more here, I believe they will confirm our claim that there are few better jobs in the academy. If you would like some data on that, just examine recent COACHE and HERI reports that show high satisfaction among our faculty along multiple dimensions ranging from highly engaged students in small class settings to supportive colleagues who take genuine interest in your scholarship.
As this year’s search season gets underway, I hope you will encourage your students attending the ASA meeting in Chicago next month to check us out. We will be there conducting informational interviews. As you well know, one of the best ways to stand out among the many impressive applications is to begin with making an early impression beyond what is contained in the dossier. Tell your students not to be discouraged if they aren’t able to land an interview at the meeting; we have already received numerous requests for interviews. In my opinion, the key to an effective application is to clearly demonstrate one’s preparation for and experience teaching exceptionally strong students and maintaining an impressive scholarly program. Those ready and committed to doing these things are precisely the candidates from whom we want to receive applications. Please feel free to post this message and/or forward it to those you think might be interested. Thank you for your assistance and kind consideration.
Ric Sheffield
