FYI
Interdisciplinary Research Team Facilitator
Deadline:
May 31, 2014 Location: Annapolis, MD
The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC), located in Annapolis, Maryland, is a think-tank type research center funded by the National Science Foundation through the University of Maryland. SESYNC is devoted to promoting interdisciplinary synthesis research on the sustainability of coupled human-natural systems, and is seeking a candidate to provide support and leadership for facilitating research team interactions and progress.
The successful candidate will:
l facilitate and moderate face-to-face meetings of diverse participants; support participatory problem identification and the development of strategic approaches to research and solution finding; l develop methods to support and advance team science; and contribute to overall Center activities, including program management, proposal review, and Center planning. The ideal candidate will have a familiarity with society-environment issues, be able to form a working knowledge of group project content quickly, and have experience managing group dynamics and learning processes. These skills may or may not come in the form of formal group facilitation training.
In addition, the candidate should have a research interest in developing and applying methods to support interdisciplinary science and the synthesis process. The job entails working with diverse, newly formed groups to build a common language and understanding amongst project participants to address a particular socio-environmental issue of interest. Project teams come from a wide variety of backgrounds, and may be a mix of academics from different disciplines, scientists from non-profit and non-governmental organizations, government agencies, members of public and private businesses, nd/or stakeholders in the socio-environmental issue of interest. Participants typically will not have worked together before and will likely bring different assumptions and tacit knowledge to meetings. Thus, the facilitator will help participants: 1. express their concept(s) of the project and its proposed trajectory; 2. identify patterns in these frameworks to develop a common language for and understanding of the project's challenges; and 3. develop and evaluate potential pathways for successful project execution.
Background:
SESYNC hosts scholars and stakeholders to work in research teams; short courses and workshops; and has an in-house research staff that includes graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research
scientists, and sabbatical fellows. Research funded by the Center involves creative integration of data, models, and theories from disparate disciplines. Face-to-face meetings are at the core of SESYNC's approach to synthesis in an effort to build a community of scholars with the skills and interest to pursue synthetic research focused on human-environment interactions. We seek a personable individual to lead group meetings and facilitate the emergence of shared understanding through targeted questions and guided dialogue. The facilitator will need to develop a working familiarity with the scientific context of each project, and guide the groups to co-identify barriers and co-produce solutions to advance the synthetic research process. In the short-term, successful project team meetings will establish a common language for working across disciplines, and craft a shared vision of project planning, organization, and execution. Long-term success will entail building shared understanding and forging new collaborative relationships amongst project participants, as well as developing new methods to support interdisciplinary team science and advance group progress towards synthetic research products.
Requirements:
l A PhD or MS with training or a minimum of two years' experience in leading or facilitating interdisciplinary research projects and/or science teams. l An interest in socio-environmental issues. l Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and strong organizational abilities. l A professional demeanor and ability to work with a variety of individuals from different disciplines in an office setting is a must.
Salary: Commensurate with experience.
How to Apply: For best consideration, applications should be submitted by May 31, 2014, at 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Applications must be submitted as a single PDF file including cover letter that describes your group facilitation experience, full CV, and the names and contact information for three references. This information must be submitted using the webform below.
