We're hiring for two tenure-track positions in Urban Studies & Planning here at Portland State. The job posting is pasted below, and please note that the deadline is fast approaching (Dec. 1st).
Assistant Professor/Associate Professor, Tenure Track (2 positions)
Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning
College of Urban and Public Affairs
Portland State University
The Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning seeks two tenure-track faculty at the assistant or associate level. We are looking for colleagues who will contribute to PSU’s mission of “Let Knowledge Serve the City,” and our School’s mission: “to assist in the development of healthy communities through an interdisciplinary program of teaching, research and public service. Faculty and students engage the intellectual, policy and practice aspects of urban studies and planning from the local to the international levels and actively participate in the analysis, development and dissemination of the innovations for which Portland and the Northwest are known.” We seek colleagues who will engage with communities in scholarship and teaching to effect positive change, including improving social equity and justice, who will enthusiastically contribute to strengthening our academic programs and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Candidates should have expertise in one or more of the following topical areas:
· Energy & climate change, including behavioral and socio-cultural dimensions
· Natural disaster and community resilience
· Environmental justice, including a focus on political organizing and social movements
· Smart cities, including a focus on behavior, policy, planning, and/or equity
· Regional land use planning
Reflecting our interdisciplinary school, we welcome scholars studying these issues in urban and rapidly urbanizing contexts, including in Global South and transnational contexts, through a broad range of conceptual frameworks, and using a variety of research methods, including 'big data' approaches, ethnography, or community-based participatory research. Candidates should state their substantive areas of expertise along with their disciplinary/interdisciplinary approaches and their primary research methods as they describe their scholarly agenda in the cover letter.
The Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning offers five degrees: the B.A./B.S. in Community Development, the Master of Urban and Regional Planning, the Master of Real Estate Development and the Master and Ph.D. in Urban Studies, along with graduate certificates in Energy Policy and Management, Transportation, Real Estate Development, Applied Social Demography, Urban Design, and Sustainable Food Systems. Portland State University is a nationally acclaimed leader in community-based learning. Faculty work closely with several research and service units in the School and College, including the Center for Urban Studies (including Community Environmental Services and Planning Oregon), the Institute for Portland Metropolitan Studies, the Population Research Center, and the Institute on Aging.
The successful candidate will be prepared to teach conventional, hybrid and online courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, advise graduate students, pursue an active research agenda, and obtain external funding. Candidates should consider how they could contribute to the growth and continued improvement of our School, especially in the following strategic areas:
· Community Development undergraduate program
· Graduate certificates and Masters in Urban Studies
· Campus-wide efforts related to sustainability, energy, climate change, and smart cities, including proposals for external funding
· New degree program(s) related to resilience and disasters
· Planning practice and research in the region and state
· Research funding for Ph.D. students
· On-line course offerings
Please note that the School is also conducting a search for a non-tenure track assistant professor. A single search committee will lead the search for all three positions. We will be reviewing candidates for all three positions simultaneously, with the aim of finding three colleagues who collectively will fill current and anticipated gaps. Candidates who want to be considered for the non-tenure track position, must apply to it separately.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in urban studies, urban and regional planning, community development, environmental studies, sociology, anthropology, geography, gender studies, ethnic studies, environmental or social psychology, or another related discipline, or be able to provide assurance of completion of a Ph.D. prior to appointment. Candidates for associate professor who have tenure at their current institution may be considered for tenure as part of the review and hiring process.
The review of applications will begin December 1, 2016, and the positions will remain open until filled. Inquiries can be directed to Professor Connie Ozawa, Search Committee Chair, at ozawac(a)pdx.edu<mailto:ozawac@pdx.edu>. Applications, consisting of a letter of interest, a c.v., one writing sample, and contact information for three references, should be submitted through the PSU Human Resources website: https://jobs.hrc.pdx.edu/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__jobs.hrc.pdx.edu_&d=Cw…> The letter of interest should cover the applicant’s research and teaching interests, as well as how you will contribute to our School.
The appointment is scheduled to begin September 16, 2017.
