Microsoft Research (MSR) is looking for a Research Assistant for its Social Media Collective in the New England lab, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Social Media Collective consists of danah boyd, Mike Ananny, and Alice Marwick, as well as faculty visitors and PhD interns. MSR is an academic institution and the Social Media Collective consists of scholars doing work in the areas of sociology, anthropology, media studies, and communications.
An appropriate candidate will be both passionate and knowledgeable about social media, have strong writing and organization skills, and have experience working on research projects. Job responsibilities will include producing literature reviews, coding ethnographic data, editing manuscripts, and organizing events. The RA will also get to collaborate on ongoing research and, while a publication is not a guarantee, the RA will be encouraged to co-author scholarly articles while at MSR. The RAship will require 20-25 hours per week on site in Cambridge, MA. It is a 1-year only contractor position, paid hourly with flexible daytime hours. The ideal start date would be in May or June, but is flexible. This position does not include benefits or relocation.
This position is ideal for young scholars who are applying to PhD programs in sociology, anthropology, communications, media studies, information studies, and related fields and want to get involved with research. Current New England-based MA/PhD students are welcome to apply provided that they can commit to 25 hours of on-site work per week.

We anticipate openings for Research Associate(s) in the summer and fall of 2011.
Under the direction of senior staff, typical responsibilities include the design of research projects and statistical analyses, management and analysis of large and complex data sets, site visits and literature reviews, writing and collaborating on reports for publication, preparing presentations, assisting in the development of research proposals, and supervising the work of research assistants and/or programmers.
We are interested in candidates with substantive knowledge in one or more of these research areas:
Using data for school or program improvement
K12 and postsecondary educational access, engagement and outcomes such as drop-out and college readiness for at risk populations
Workforce and college readiness for youth and adults including connecting academics and career-technical education, ESL, adult basic education, workforce basic skills and correctional education
Student financial aid, student debt and college costs
Minimum qualifications include:
Advanced degree in education, sociology, public policy, statistics, economics, demography, or other social science field
1-2 years relevant research experience with substantive knowledge in an education-related research area
Substantial knowledge of social science research methods with demonstrated experience in statistical techniques and data management
Experience designing research/evaluation projects and in using both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis strategies, including interviews, focus groups, and surveys
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to organize, write about and discuss data and complex issues clearly
Strong computer literacy skills with advanced knowledge of MS Office and solid experience using statistical software such as SAS or STATA
Superior organizational skills and a commitment to accuracy and excellence
Valid long-term authorization to work in the United States
