FYI!
Cornell Sociology is participating in a program funded by the Mellon Foundation to award a generous Post-Doctoral Fellowship to a sociologist whose work is qualitative. This represents a wonderful opportunity for the candidate and for the department if we can identify a sociologist who will be competitive among a pool that will consist primarily of humanities candidates.
Please encourage your eligible graduate students to consider applying. You can read about the fellowship below.
http://as.cornell.edu/academics/opportunities/diversity-fellowships/index.c…
Cornell University Doctoral/Postdoctoral Diversity Fellowships
The College of Arts and Sciences of Cornell University is pleased to announce the establishment of doctoral/postdoctoral diversity fellowships in the humanities and humanistic social sciences.
The fellowships are funded by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The Cornell diversity fellowships are designed to support the early development of scholars who show promise of distinguished research careers. Eligible applicants might be from underrepresented groups, have faced economic hardship, be first-generation college graduates, or work on topics related to these areas. This list is not meant to be exhaustive. Each application should include a brief statement of the grounds of eligibility in the cover letter.
The fellowships come in two forms. Applicants who expect to complete their Ph.D.'s in 2012-13 are eligible for three-year fellowships consisting of a doctoral completion year followed by two postdoctoral years. Those who expect to complete their degrees in 2011-12 may apply for two-year postdoctoral fellowships. There is no teaching associated with the doctoral completion fellowship year. Postdoctoral fellows teach one course per year.
All fellows will also attend a weekly research seminar, in which they will be joined by an annually changing group of Cornell faculty who have similar scholarly interests.
A fellowship will be awarded only if the home department believes the applicant would make a very strong candidate for a tenure-track position that the department expects to have open in the next two-to-three years.
Cornell is an Equal Opportunity Employer and Educator.
How to Apply
Applicants should write directly to the participating departments listed below. All applications should be submitted electronically. They should include a cover letter of no-more-than-three pages that discusses research and teaching and that provides a brief statement of the grounds of eligibility. In addition, please send a curriculum vitae, a dissertation abstract, an article-length writing sample, and three-five letters of recommendation. The deadline for receipt of applications is November 1, 2011.
The College expects to award four fellowships for 2012-13. Awards will be announced by December 23.
The doctoral fellowship award for 2012-13 consists of a stipend of $31,000, Cornell University health insurance, a one-time $4,000 moving allowance, and $3,000 in research/travel money--the last of which can be used, for instance, to visit the fellow's doctoral institution. The postdoctoral fellowship award for 2012-13 includes a salary of $56,000, full Cornell University employee benefits, a one-time $4,000 moving allowance, and a research/travel fund of $3,000.

Requirements
The topic of the required weekly seminar will shift each year, to accord with the research agendas of its participants. The seminar has two main purposes. One is to provide a stimulating environment in which dissertations can be completed and prepared for publication. The other is to help each fellow identify and begin work on a second major project. In accord with these goals, funding will be available for conferences and for assistance with the publication costs of edited volumes containing the work of seminar members and perhaps co-edited by some of the fellows.
Postdoctoral fellows offer a course each year, taught above the entry level, in fields related to their research.
All fellows will be assigned one or more mentors, with whom they will be expected to meet regularly.
Fellows are required to be in residence each semester.
In order to receive postdoctoral fellowships, fellows must show proof of completion of the Ph.D., in the form of a letter from the granting institution's Registrar or a copy of the diploma, prior to the beginning of the Fall term of the first year of the postdoc. This stipulation applies to both two-year and three-year fellows.
FYI
The Center for Advanced Study in the Social Sciences (CEACS), Juan March Institute, Madrid, invites applications for three junior research positions, two in the field of political science and the third in the field of sociology.
For the positions in political science, the Center seeks people working in political economy or comparative politics.
For the position in sociology, the Center seeks someone studying the problems of inequality, immigration or labor markets.
Candidates must have obtained a PhD degree after 1st January 2009 and before 1st October 2012, the date on which the employment contract commences.
Junior researchers do not have teaching obligations. Selected candidates are expected to publish their research in prestigious journals and presses and to participate in the academic activities of the Center. Salary will be € 42,000 per year. In addition, there is an annual research fund of € 2,500 for academic meetings. The contract will be for a period of three years, renewable upon a positive evaluation that will consider, above all, the record of publications.
The Center was established in 1987. It is a small institution which promotes high quality research in the social sciences, with a strong emphasis on comparative and analytical approaches. It has a strong international profile. It also has an excellent specialized library which stores a huge number of political, sociological, and economic data sets. The kind of research conducted in the Center, as well as its activities and publications, can be found on this web page (http://www.march.es/ceacs/ingles/).
Application is online (www.march.es/application<http://www.march.es/application>) and should include a letter of presentation, curriculum vitae, at least one sample of academic work, and at least two letters of reference. The deadline for applications is 6th November 2011.
