Subject: postdoc position at UCLA
Dear friends,
We are recruiting a postdoc! Please feel free to pass this along to anyone who might be interested. Thanks so much for your help!
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, UCLA Department of Sociology
Jacob Foster (UCLA Department of Sociology; Affiliate, Center for Social Statistics) is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position to begin in Summer 2019 (start date negotiable). Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second. The position is part of a major project in "Diverse Intelligences," funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation. Diverse Intelligences is a new transdisciplinary initiative that aims to break new ground in the study of mind, cognition, and intelligence (of diverse forms and manifestations) by pulling down the barriers between disciplines. The postdoc will lead projects that apply methods from the "science of science" to the study of this emerging research community, helping us to understand how collective intelligence is socially produced by scientific fields.
Ideal candidates will have a PhD in a relevant field. We are open to candidates from both computational science backgrounds (e.g., information science, cognitive science, computer science, applied mathematics, statistics, physics, network science) or social science backgrounds (e.g., sociology, history and philosophy of science, science & technology studies). Candidates must have some expertise in techniques relevant to computational social science (e.g., network analysis, machine learning, natural language processing). While candidates need not have experience studying scientists, scientific publications, and other traces of scientific activity, such background is certainly desirable.
The postdoc will be embedded in a vibrant community of computational social scientists at UCLA, with ties to scholars with substantive expertise across the disciplines that study Diverse Intelligences.
Informal inquiries from potential applicants regarding details of the position, candidate suitability, etc. should be sent to foster(a)soc.ucla.edu<mailto:foster@soc.ucla.edu>. Formal application materials should include a CV, cover letter with statement of research interests and experience, contact information for three references, and up to three publications. Applications will be considered on a rotating basis until the position is filled.
All qualified applicants will receive full consideration without regard to race, color, sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other basis protected by law. Women and underrepresented minority applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
Please feel free to forward this announcement as appropriate!
