I’m reaching out in the event that you have grad students who are interested in teaching-focused jobs. I would appreciate it if you would forward the message below to your grad students or to any specific students who you think might be a good fit. I’m sure you could tell them about my experience some, but also please let anyone know I’m happy to talk. Here are the details:
Our department is recruiting a sociologist for a Visiting Assistant Professor position for this coming fall, with specialization in race and family (see my department chair's message below). We’d really love to get a strong candidate for this emergency hire. While this position cannot convert to anything beyond a VAP, we expect to run a search to fill the tenure-track line vacated by a departure, and the specialization would likely remain the same. So this could be a great opportunity for a candidate to expand their teaching portfolio and get their foot in the door for applying for assistant professorships, including the search we expect to run in AY 2022-23. Christopher Newport University is a great fit for someone who enjoys teaching, especially undergraduates, as that is our focus and it is truly valued. But we also live up to supporting it with the vast majority of our classes capped at 19 students and scheduling that almost always keeps number of preps limited (tenure-track faculty have a 3-3 load). There is also still strong support for research and a very collegial faculty; our department in particular has a really supportive and friendly atmosphere.
I am happy to answer any questions from anyone considering sending materials. I have been here five years and the race class this VAP would cover is in my teaching portfolio as well, so if anyone would like to discuss the department, our students, the university, the area, etc., please don’t hesitate to reach out. Please contact me or Johnny ASAP as this process may move fast.
Best,
Jane

My name is Johnny Finn and I’m the Chair of the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University. I’m writing because we just had a faculty member depart unexpectedly and we’re recruiting a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor who can teach our upper-level undergraduate seminars on race, ethnicity, and racism (SOCL 316), sociology of the family (SOCL 303), and potentially one more elective course in the candidate’s area of specialization starting this August. This would be a full-time position with competitive salary, benefits, etc. The teaching load would be 4-4, though we are generally able to limit anyone’s schedule to a maximum of three preps per semester, and most classes in our department have fewer than 20 students. Could you please forward this to any graduate students or recent grads you know who might be on the market?
Anyone interested should contact me directly via email or telephone as soon as possible (john.finn(a)cnu.edu<mailto:john.finn@cnu.edu>, 757-594-7939), and will eventually need to provide a cover letter, cv, graduate transcripts, and names and contact information for three references.
More information about the university and the department:
Christopher Newport University is a public liberal arts university located in Newport News, Virginia. Enrolling approximately 5,000 students, our Fall 2021 incoming class presented average high school GPA and SAT scores of 3.8 and 1213, respectively. The University is ranked by U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges guide as 3rd among public regional universities in the South and 6th overall, and has recently completed more than $1 billion in capital construction on its 260-acre campus.
CNU’s Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Anthropology is composed of 16 full-time faculty, and offers majors in Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, and Social Work and minors in Sociology, Criminology, Anthropology, and Geography. Through small classes and an integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum, our goal is to develop students into critical thinkers, readers, and writers who go on to become global citizens with compassion, communicative skills, and knowledge to help others.

Sent on behalf of Professor Wes Hartmann
May 31, 2022
Dear Professor Marsden,
The Graduate School of Business at Stanford University invites applications for tenure-track faculty positions in marketing beginning September 1, 2023. All ranks and relevant disciplines will be considered. Candidates should have or expect to complete a PhD by September 1, 2023, and should possess a strong and active research record. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research and to teach both MBA and PhD courses in marketing.
In addition to new PhDs, we are eager to consider qualified candidates who have been in an academic position for even a few years. Thus, we ask that you make this position known to students at your institution and to others, such as recent students, who you think might be both qualified and interested, as we would very much like to have the opportunity to review their application materials.
Applicants should submit their applications electronically by visiting the web site http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/recruiting<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.gsb.stanford.edu_re…> and uploading their curriculum vitae, research papers and publications, and teaching evaluations, if applicable, on that site. For an application to be considered complete, all applicants must submit a CV, a job market paper and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be submitted by June 30, 2022. For questions regarding the application process, please send an email to faculty_recruiter(a)gsb.stanford.edu<mailto:faculty_recruiter@gsb.stanford.edu>.
Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Stanford welcomes applications from all who would bring additional dimensions to the University’s research, teaching and clinical missions.
Sincerely,
Wes Hartmann

Dear Grad Students
One of my former grad students works at a company called MDRC in NY (although they have offices in Oakland and Washington DC as well). They have a number of jobs available for people who do either qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods research at both the MA and PhD levels. You can see the jobs at Careers page<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__secure6.saashr.com_ta_…>. If you do want to connect with our alum, Crystal Byndloss, you can contact her at Crystal.Byndloss(a)mdrc.org<mailto:Crystal.Byndloss@mdrc.org> If you have questions you can also ask me! A few of my former undergrads have also worked there.
Best,
Mary
