McGill University is committed to diversity and equity in employment. It welcomes applications from: women, Aboriginal persons, persons with disabilities, ethnic minorities, persons of minority sexual orientation or gender identity, visible minorities, and others who may contribute to diversification. The language of instruction at McGill is English; however a working knowledge of French is an asset.
Hi all,
Will you be applying to jobs this year? If so, please review the information below which contains the latest process for requesting letters of recommendation from Sociology faculty.
New this year, faculty assistants will be using Harvard's Google Apps to share application lists and collect supporting materials from students. The greatest benefit of sharing documents via Google is that you and the faculty assistants are able to share ownership of materials, resulting in the most up to date information being available to all parties.
If you will be requesting letters of recommendation, please follow the steps below:
1. Email the faculty member(s) from whom you are requesting letters alerting them you are on the market and CC their Faculty Assistant. Using Google Drive, the Faculty Assistant will share with you a standard application list template to complete.
2. Fill out the application list template, noting all positions to which you are applying. You can continue to update the list on Google Drive as new positions are posted.
3. Share with the Faculty Assistant any pertinent application materials (CV, Writing Sample, Research or Teaching Statement, articles or chapters, etc.) the faculty may want to reference as they write your letters.
As letters are sent/submitted the Faculty Assistant will mark them as sent on the application spreadsheet, providing you with up to date information regarding the status of letters.
Given that the recommendation letter season is already upon us, we ask that you please contact your faculty and their assistant by Tuesday, Sept. 2 if you will be requesting letters this fall. For your convenience, I've included a list of faculty assistants with their assignments and email addresses below.
* Sara Munzinger (Dobbin, Waters, Whyte): smunzinger(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:smunzinger@fas.harvard.edu>
* Hunter Taylor (Brinton, Lamont, Western): ahtaylor167(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:ahtaylor167@fas.harvard.edu>
* Katy Ward (Bobo, Sampson): kward01(a)fas.harvard.edu<mailto:kward01@fas.harvard.edu>
* Genevieve Butler (Beckfield, Winship): gbutler(a)wjh.harvard.edu<mailto:gbutler@wjh.harvard.edu>
* Lauren Dye (Patterson, Marsden): ldye(a)wjh.harvard.edu<mailto:ldye@wjh.harvard.edu>
* Deb De Laurell (Bonikowski, Chang, Desmond, Garip, Kay, Viterna): deborahd(a)wjh.harvard.edu<mailto:deborahd@wjh.harvard.edu>
Beyond these new procedures, we'd like to remind you to give faculty as much advance notice as possible when requesting recommendation letters. If you are approaching a faculty member for a letter for the first time, it is helpful to give them a minimum of one month's notice so that they have time to prepare an effective letter.
We hope that these new procedures will help streamline the recommendation letter process and reduce the burden on both students and faculty. Note that if you do not already have a Google account, you will need to create one. If you would like a Harvard affiliated account, you can sign up at g.harvard.edu<http://g.harvard.edu/>.
As always, I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.
Warmly,
Deb

I have a sociologist friend who works for a private research company (NERI), and they are looking to hire a qualitative researcher for 6-8 months. It might be perfect for the right grad student looking for a temporary position to gain applied research experience. I was wondering if there was a way to post the ad (attached) so that the graduate students could see it (or hear about it)? Sorry for the trouble -- I just wasn't quite sure how to announce this kind of opportunity. If a particular list-serve is the best option, could you possibly send me the address?
Thanks!
Dwight
p.s. Any interested students can contact me as well -- I used to work there!
