Subject: Teaching Opportunities for Advanced Graduate Students - Spring 2016
[cid:47F585B6-EC9A-4229-8270-218933B5FB37]
________________________________
Dear Colleague:
Advanced graduate students are always looking for opportunities to teach in their area of expertise. The Experimental College at Tufts University is a place where that can happen.
The comments that we consistently hear from the twenty-five instructors who teach each semester at the Experimental College go something like this:
"Being able to teach a course of my own design to highly motivated undergrads was a unique opportunity and a genuinely rewarding experience.”
Enclosed you will find a poster announcing our semi-annual search for course proposals from people in the greater Boston community who have a special expertise to share with our undergraduates.
The Experimental College offers a full range of largely new courses every semester – on an elective basis – to the Tufts undergraduate student body. Our courses are intended to provide an alternative to the traditional departmental curricula by presenting interdisciplinary or contemporary subjects. Classes are usually kept to less than twenty students and are highly discussion/participation oriented.
An applicant whose proposal is approved will become a Visiting Lecturer for the semester, will receive a stipend, and will have access to university facilities.
Perhaps someone in your department or program, an advanced graduate student or adjunct faculty person, would be interested in this opportunity? If so, please refer to our website at www.excollege.tufts.edu<http://www.excollege.tufts.edu> for more information and the application.
The deadline for Spring 2016 proposals is October 9, 2015.
Your consideration in posting our announcement and spreading the word is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
[cid:D20A061A-50AA-4E53-9A83-4F0FE503D31E]

Might I ask you to circulate the ads below to Harvard students on the market? Colby will be hiring a tenure track assistant professor this year, as well as two post-doctoral fellows.
Many thanks,
Neil
Sociology Tenure Track Position
The Department of Sociology at Colby College is hiring a tenure-track assistant professor starting September 1, 2016. Colby is a selective liberal arts college in a spectacular setting with a rich sociological history: it was here that Albion Small taught some of the first sociology courses in the country.
We are searching for an early career scholar with a publication track record who aims to make an impact through high-profile research and student engagement. Our ideal candidate would also want to help build a liberal arts sociology program for the 21st century. Areas of specialization are open.
Review of completed applications will begin on October 15, 2015 and continue until the position is filled. A complete application must include: a curriculum vitae; letter of application that outlines the candidate's research, teaching philosophy, and teaching experience; representative samples of scholarship; and three letters of recommendation.
Materials must be sent electronically, in pdf files, to Neil Gross, chair of the department, at sociologyTTsearch(a)colby.edu<mailto:sociologyTTsearch@colby.edu>. Candidates may be A.B.D., but Ph.D.s must be in hand prior to September 1, 2016.
Colby is a private, coeducational liberal arts college that admits students and makes employment decisions on the basis of the individual's qualifications to contribute to Colby's educational objectives and institutional needs. Colby College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, disability, religion, ancestry or national origin, age, marital status, genetic information, or veteran's status in employment or in our educational programs. Colby is an Equal Opportunity employer, committed to excellence through diversity, and encourages applications from qualified persons of color, women, persons with disabilities, military veterans and members of other under-represented groups. Colby complies with Title IX, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in an institution's education programs and activities. Questions regarding Title IX may be referred to Colby's Title IX coordinator or to the federal Office of Civil Rights. Sociology Postdoctoral Fellow Positions
The Department of Sociology at Colby College announces a new postdoctoral program starting in 2016-17 for promising researchers and teachers. Sociology Postdoctoral Fellows will teach three courses in each year of a two-year term. Courses will be related to Fellows' areas of interest, and will provide early career scholars a chance to hone their teaching skills in a selective liberal arts college environment. Fellows will be expected to pursue an active research and publishing agenda, and will receive mentoring from senior faculty with editorial and teaching experience. Research support includes funding for a symposium in the second year where leading scholars from other institutions will be invited in to discuss Fellows' work in progress.
For 2016-17 we are hiring two Postdoctoral Fellows. Areas of specialization are open. Review of completed applications will begin on October 15, 2015 and continue until the positions are filled. A complete application must include: a curriculum vitae; letter of application that explains the candidate's research and interest in acquiring teaching experience in a liberal arts setting; representative samples of scholarship; and three letters of recommendation. As Colby sociology is also hiring for a tenure-track position this year, applications must clearly state that they are for the Postdoctoral Fellow position. (Applicants may apply separately for both the Fellowship and the tenure-track position, but the Fellowship-unlike our tenure-track line-is geared toward scholars who do not yet have significant publication records.)
Materials must be sent electronically, in pdf files, to Neil Gross, chair of the department, at sociologyfellowsearch(a)colby.edu<mailto:sociologyfellowsearch@colby.edu>. Candidates may be A.B.D., but Ph.D.s must be in hand prior to September 1, 2016.
