Dear Colleague:
I wish to draw your attention to an unusual opportunity for recent PhDs and advanced graduate students in the social sciences or law. The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, an endowed program established at Harvard University in 1984, announces its latest competition for Harvard Academy Scholarships. The Harvard Academy seeks outstanding scholars at the start of their careers whose work combines disciplinary excellence with a command of the language and history or culture of countries or regions outside of the United States or Canada. Their scholarship may elucidate domestic, comparative, or transnational issues, past or present.
Each year the Harvard Academy offers approximately four to six two-year, in-residence, postdoctoral fellowships to such individuals. Academy Scholars receive generous stipends, research and travel funding, and are provided with shared office space as well as administrative support at Harvard's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. They have full access to all of Harvard's academic resources and have no obligations except to pursue their research and studies. Some teaching is permitted but not required.
To be eligible, applicants must be recent recipients of the PhD (or equivalent professional) degree or pursuing a doctoral candidacy and actively engaged in the final stages of writing the dissertation. The attached brochure provides more information about the scholarships. I hope you will bring this opportunity to the attention of your students and your colleagues.
The Harvard Academy is particularly dependent on the assessment by faculty references of an applicant's academic accomplishments and scholarly potential.
Please feel free to contact The Harvard Academy at any time for more information. You are encouraged to check our website, https://academy.wcfia.harvard.edu/, as well. Information for contacting The Harvard Academy is included in the attached brochure. You may also contact us by email at applicationinquiries(a)wcfia.harvard.edu<mailto:applicationinquiries@wcfia.harvard.edu>.
Thank you for your assistance and interest.
Sincerely,
Timothy J. Colton
