THE UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK
The School of Criminal Justice invites applications for a full-time Post-Doctoral Research Associate to begin Fall 2018. The Selection Committee will give special consideration to applicants who are from ethnic groups currently underrepresented in the academic field of criminology. We will not make awards solely on this basis, however, and all applicants will be evaluated on their own merits. We are especially interested in scholars researching crime and justice among minority populations.
This position is part of a major new Drive for Diversity initiative at the UAlbany School of Criminal Justice. The initiative also includes additional support for PhD students, our Justice and Multiculturalism in the 21st Century project, and faculty recruitment.
We anticipate a two-year appointment for this position. A PhD in criminal justice or closely allied field is required and must be completed before beginning in Fall 2018. Candidates must have a demonstrated potential for research excellence. The Research Associate will be expected to conduct independent research, seek external funding, and collaborate with senior faculty in the School with similar research interests. There is no teaching requirement, though there will be an opportunity to teach a seminar if the Research Associate chooses. 12-month salary is $55,000.
Please send a cover letter, curriculum vitae, two letters of recommendation, and a statement outlining your research interests and your planned research agenda during the two-year appointment to Michele Fox at mfox(a)albany.edu<mailto:mfox@albany.edu>. Please reference search # CJ0916D in your cover letter. Review of applications will begin January 1, 2018, and will continue until the position is filled.
The University at Albany is an EEO/AA/IRCA/ADA employer.

Jason Beckfield
Sociology Department Chair
Harvard University
Dear Professor Beckfield,
I am writing to you to let you know of a new tenure-track Professor of Sociology position available at Soka University of America, in sunny Orange County California, near Irvine. As a chair of Sociology at Harvard University, I am hoping you can encourage recent graduates from your program at Harvard University to apply, and since we are offering this position as open rank, please also share with any interested faculty colleagues in your department.
In case you have not heard of Soka - it is a relative young (16 year old) liberal arts college in Aliso Viejo. Soka University is currently ranked #39 in American liberal arts colleges by USNEWS, with ample resources and an innovative interdisciplinary curriculum, and 3-week "learning cluster" courses in addition to semester courses. Soka is also very international - with 40% of the students coming from overseas, making for a very intercultural learning environment. It is very interdisciplinary, with an innovative core curriculum that includes a required Core 200 course for all sophomores about the "Enduring Questions in a Social Context" and several others that explore cross-cutting issues facing humanity.
Can you please forward this email to any potentially interested candidates - former students, colleagues, or others who might be a good candidate? Our application process is online and the job can be accessed at this link: http://apply.interfolio.com/45601<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__apply.interfolio.com_45…>
Thanks very much for your help in sharing this opening with your colleagues at Harvard University. If you or candidates have any questions about Soka University or the position, they can also reach me at bpenprase(a)soka.edu<mailto:bpenprase@soka.edu><mailto:bpenprase@soka.edu<mailto:bpenprase@soka.edu>>.
Sincerely,
Bryan E. Penprase, Ph.D.
Dean of Faculty, Undergraduate Program
Soka University of America

Priority will be given to candidates who can also teach qualitative and quantitative methods and sociology of education. Research interests and area are open, however they should complement those of the current faculty in the SBS concentration. The standard full-time teaching load at SUA is three courses in Sociology and two courses in SUA's cross-disciplinary general education curriculum (Core, Modes of Inquiry, or Learning Cluster; for course descriptions see our catalog at www.soka.edu<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.soka.edu&d=DwMFaQ&c…><http://www.soka.edu/<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.soka.edu_&d=DwMFaQ&…>>). The teaching load per academic year is five courses.
SUA offers a challenging program in liberal arts with a focus on the Pacific Rim, and a strong emphasis on international/intercultural exposure. All undergraduates must complete four semesters of foreign (non-English) language coursework at SUA, and study abroad for one semester during their junior year. The university aims to foster rewarding intellectual relationships among faculty, and between faculty and students through collaboration and mentoring. An appreciation of the centrality of peace, global citizenship, freedom, and human rights is the founding impetus for the university and its mission.
Qualifications: Candidates must hold a PhD in Sociology, and have demonstrated excellence in teaching and research. Applicants for the position of Associate or Full Professor are expected to possess broad teaching experience, a sustained commitment to scholarship, and a record of professional accomplishment appropriate to their rank.
