Salary Range: $51,630 to $62,400
GEARS is seeking to fill 3 positions for
contracted work at the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC )/ National Center for Health
Statistics (NCHS), Hyattsville, MD, in the DC
metro area. NCHS is undertaking major improvements
in the ability of its annual ambulatory surveys to
inform policymakers about the use of preventive
services and monitor the effects of policy changes
over time. One initiative will increase the sample
of physicians for the National Ambulatory Medical
Care Survey (NAMCS) to permit state-based
estimates of preventive services in ambulatory
visits. Another initiative will use NAMCS and the
National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey
(NHAMCS) to document the use of appropriate
preventive services at visits with patients
diagnosed with heart disease or stroke.

Position Responsibilities
The contractors will aid in computerizing NAMCS
and NHAMCS data collection to improve the quality
and timeliness of the data and analyses. This will
require designing new methods and tools,
conducting a pilot and pretest, revising the
methods and tools, training field representatives,
and implementing final methods and materials in
the two national surveys for calendar year 2012.
Increases in the NAMCS sample of physicians will
begin with calendar year 2011 and continue with
2012. Implementation will also require rethinking
and redesigning NCHS procedures for sampling
physicians and visits, relating to the field
representatives and providers, processing data,
making statistical estimates, and making data
files available to the public.
Education
A Master's degree in biostatistics, survey
statistics, health services research,
epidemiology, economics, sociology, nursing,
medicine, or a related field, or a Bachelor's
degree and equivalent experience.
Other Minimum Qualifications
A valid work authorization or U.S. citizenship and
Experience with SAS statistical software
Other Desirable Qualifications
Training and experience in the analysis of data,
data collection techniques, and data analysis;
Experience with BLAISE software; and
Knowledge of health data systems.
